What led to protests

The protests erupted in the Uttarakhand town due to the demolition of an unlawfully constructed madrasa and a prayer area within its premises. A curfew has been enforced and authorities issued shoot-at-sight orders in response to the situation. (PTI photo)

Legalities behind the demolition

According to the officials, the buildings were located on government land without authorization and were taken down following a prior warning, in adherence to a court directive, after completing all necessary legal procedures. The demolition initiative commenced once the municipal corporation had gained full legal control over both structures. (PTI photo)

Demolition sparks chaos

The residents of the area initiated rioting just 30 minutes into the demolition activity. The mob threw stones at the police personnel, who managed to disperse them without resorting to unnecessary force. The rioters then launched petrol bombs at the uniformed officers and ultimately attacked the police station. (Reuters photo)

Arrests made post violence

Four individuals have been apprehended on suspicion of participating in the assault on both police stations and its personnel, leading to the filing of three FIRs. It appears that a group of approximately 15 to 20 individuals played a role in inciting the mob. (PTI photo)
