Alarm: Mahajan's condition worsens
MUMBAI: BJP general secretary Pramod Mahajan's condition sharply deteriorated on Monday, with doctors treating him announcing that the leader had developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The new complication indicates complete breathing failure.
A statement issued by Hinduja Hospital authorities on Monday said Mahajan was showing signs of evolving an ARDS.

"It is a worrying development and poses an immediate cause of concern," hospital director Anupam Verma told reporters at 3 pm, which was after chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and senior BJP leader L K Advani visited Mahajan.
In ARDS, a serious condition with high mortality rate, fluids leak from the blood vessels into the air sacs of the lungs. Breathing becomes difficult as a result.
Dr G B Daver, who leads the care-giving team, told The Times of India, "We had anticipated this complication and are giving adequate treatment." However, the new complication could make treatment more difficult, he said.
ARDS, in Mahajan's case, is possibly the result of the extensive multiple injuries he suffered on April 22 after his brother Pravin fired three bullets at him. His blood pressure was low for a considerable length of time, affecting the function of vital organs.
Mahajan was also given massive blood transfusions over 40 bottles which carry their own risk, said doctors. Moreover, Mahajan has "systematic sepsis", a bacterial infection that can eventually lead to multi-organ failure.1
