The suspect fled the shrubbery where he had been hiding and escaped in a black car. A witness helped police identify the vehicle, and authorities later tracked it down. "We have somebody in custody right now that is a potential suspect," Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said at a news conference.
Trump had been golfing at his West Palm Beach course, near his Mar-a-Lago residence, when the shooter was spotted hiding in bushes one hole ahead of him, according to Bradshaw.
"President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity," campaign spokesman Steven Cheung confirmed in a statement, while Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris expressed relief that her political rival was unharmed.
In a fundraising message, Trump reassured supporters, saying, "Fear not! I am safe and well, and no one was hurt. Thank God!"
This marks the second assassination attempt on Trump in recent months, following an incident on July 13 when the former president was wounded in the ear while speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

But the dueling campaigns are set to march on with little interruption, a day after the Secret Service confirmed one or more of its agents "opened fire on a gunman" located near the boundary of Trump's Florida golf course and that an "AK-47 style rifle" with a scope was recovered along with a GoPro video camera.
The FBI said it was "investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination of former President Trump."
"The job done was absolutely outstanding," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Local authorities said the US Secret Service agents protecting Trump fired at a man pointing an AK-style rifle with a scope while the former president was golfing with donor Steve Witkoff when shots were fired, CNN quoted a source familiar with the development as saying.
