Arvind Kejriwal Resignation News Live Updates: Top AAP leaders in huddle at Kejriwal's house; MLAs to meet tomorrow to decide on new CM

The AAP has scheduled a series of meetings, including that of its political affairs committee, on Monday evening to decide on a new chief minister for Delhi, a day after Arvind Kejriwal's surprise announcement of quitting the post. Senior AAP leader and former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia reached Kejriwal's official residence to discuss with him the names of probables for the chief minister's post, AAP leaders said.

The AAP's Political Affairs Committee meeting is scheduled to be held at the Delhi chief minister's residence later in the evening.


Sisodia to meet Kejriwal; likely to discuss names of next Delhi CM

Senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia will meet Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday, a day after the party supremo announced to resign and not sit on the chief minister's chair till people give him a "certificate of honesty". The AAP national convener said that he would become chief minister and Manish Sisodia his deputy "only when people say we are honest".

A party functionary on Monday said, "Kejriwal and Sisodia will be meeting today. This will be the first meeting after the decision by them. The meeting is also likely to see a discussion over the next chief minister."

The meeting is slated to be held at the chief minister's official residence in the Civil Lines area.

Kejriwal, who was released on bail from the Tihar Jail in the excise policy graft case on Friday, has said that he would hold a meeting of the AAP MLAs in a couple of days and one of his party colleagues would take over as the chief minister.

His unexpected announcement kicked up a strong buzz over the names of his wife Sunita and his ministers Atishi and Gopal Rai as his possible replacement.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said he would resign after two days and would demand early polls in Delhi while vowing not to sit in CM's chair till people give him a "certificate of honesty".

Kejriwal, who was released on bail from Tihar on Friday in the excise policy graft case, said he would hold a meeting of AAP MLAs in the next couple of days and a party leader would take over as chief minister. Kejriwal told his party workers at the AAP headquarters on Sunday he would quit after two days with someone else from the party taking over as CM after a meeting of the legislative party.

He ruled out former deputy CM Manish Sisodia succeeding him. He was accompanied by his wife, Sunita. The entire cabinet will have to resign with him. The new leader of the legislative party will stake claim to form govt and pick a new council of ministers who will take oath of office. Majority will then have to be proved on the floor of the House.

Kejriwal said he would be come CM and Manish Sisodia his deputy “only when people say we are honest”.

“Delhi elections are due in Feb (2025) but I demand that the elections be held in Nov along with Maharashtra...I will sit in the CM’s chair only after people give me a certificate of honesty. I want to go through the ‘agni pariksha’ (trial by fire) after coming out of jail,” he said, referring to Sita undergoing the test after Lord Ram and she returned from exile.

Experts, however, claimed that Kejriwal cannot call for early elections without first recommending dissolution of the assembly.
