Assembly Election 2026: BJP’s Goud says Mamata “conceding defeat” after rally disruption; tensions flare in Bhabanipur

Boora Narsaiah Goud on Sunday claimed Mamata Banerjee is acting out of frustration and has “conceded defeat” after abruptly ending her Bhabanipur rally, where she alleged BJP used loudspeakers to disrupt her speech near Suvendu Adhikari’s venue.

"The frustration exhibited by Mamata Banerjee in the West Bengal elections is a clear indication that she is losing, and losing very badly. This is why she is throwing tantrums. Regarding the Amit Shah statement that all the hooligans of the TMC will be turned down, it is an ultimatum to the rowdies and hooligans, not to the common party workers," he said.

Goud accused Banerjee of minority appeasement and “hooliganism,” asserting the BJP would secure a “massive mandate.” Meanwhile, Banerjee apologised to supporters before leaving the disrupted rally, after which TMC and BJP supporters confronted each other, raising slogans.
Security forces, including RAF and local police, intervened to prevent escalation. Adhikari later termed the TMC protest “goonda raj” and said the BJP would give a “befitting reply.”

The clash highlights the sharp rivalry between Banerjee and Adhikari ahead of the April 29 second-phase polling, following a high turnout in the April 23 first phase. Counting is scheduled for May 4.

'TMC's reign of thuggery': Rahul Gandhi condemns killing of Congress supporter Debdeep Chatterjee

The LoP in a statement on X, said, "The murder of Congress worker Debdeep Chatterjee by TMC-affiliated thugs after the elections is utterly reprehensible. My deepest condolences to his bereaved family.

In West Bengal today, it is not democracy that prevails, but TMC's reign of thuggery. Intimidating, attacking, and silencing opposing voices after votes are cast—this has become TMC's defining character.

Congress's politics has never been rooted in violence, nor will it ever be. We too have lost our workers, yet we have always chosen the path of non-violence and constitutionalism. This is our legacy, this is our resolve.

The demand is clear—immediate arrest of all the guilty, the harshest punishment, and full security and compensation ensured for Debdeep's family.

We will not bow before this politics that stains India's non-violent tradition. Justice will be done."

Shah says women's safety, industry revival top BJP priorities if voted to power in Bengal

Union home minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that ensuring women's safety, bringing industries back and making West Bengal "free from infiltrators" would be the BJP government's first priorities if the party is voted to power in the state.

"First of all, we will ensure the safety of women, bring industries back, and along with that, we will also make Bengal free from infiltrators," Shah told PTI Videos during a roadshow in Howrah, when asked what the BJP would do first if it formed the government in the state.

On the TMC's claim that the high polling percentage in the first phase of polling reflected public anger against the SIR exercise, Shah said, "Everything will be clear on May 4, the day of the results."

His remarks came after nearly 93 per cent voter turnout was recorded in Thursday's first phase of polling across 152 assembly seats in the state.

Polling for Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and phase 1 of the West Bengal assembly elections concluded on Thursday with record-breaking voter participation, setting the tone for a high-stakes electoral battle. West Bengal recorded a turnout of 91.91%, significantly higher than Tamil Nadu’s 84.80%, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI). Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar termed it the highest-ever turnout since Independence, calling it a strong reflection of democratic engagement.

Several districts in West Bengal crossed the 90% mark, while Tamil Nadu also saw robust participation across key constituencies. Compared to the 2021 elections, both states recorded a sharp increase in voter turnout, underlining heightened political mobilisation and public interest.

However, political reactions to the turnout have been sharply divided. AIADMK leaders attributed the surge in Tamil Nadu to strong anti-incumbency against the ruling DMK, while DMK leaders dismissed such claims, arguing the percentage rise is linked to changes in voter rolls and long-term trends.

In West Bengal, BJP leaders expressed confidence of a sweeping victory, linking the high turnout to public support. With polling for remaining phases in Bengal scheduled later and counting set for May 4, the focus now shifts to post-poll narratives, alliances, and voter sentiment shaping the final outcome.
