Assembly Election 2026 Live Updates: 'Barrackpore paving way for change in Bengal' - PM Modi holds mega rally on the last day of campaigning

Polling for Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and phase 1 of the West Bengal assembly elections concluded on Thursday, witnessing unprecedented voter turnout and setting the stage for a closely watched electoral contest. According to the Election Commission of India, West Bengal recorded a turnout of 91.91%, while Tamil Nadu registered 84.80%, both significantly higher than their 2021 figures of 85.2% and 76.6%, respectively.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar described the turnout as the highest since Independence in both states and praised voters for their enthusiastic participation, calling it a celebration of democracy. The polling process concluded at 6 pm under tight security arrangements, with large voter participation reported across urban and rural constituencies alike.

District-wise data reflected strong engagement. In West Bengal, Dakshin Dinajpur led with 94.85%, followed by Cooch Behar, Birbhum, Jalpaiguri, and Murshidabad, all recording over 90% turnout. Tamil Nadu also saw high participation, with Karur, Salem, Dharmapuri, Erode, and Namakkal among the top-performing districts.

Despite the high turnout, political parties have offered contrasting interpretations. The AIADMK termed the voter surge in Tamil Nadu as evidence of strong anti-incumbency against the DMK government, claiming it reflects public dissatisfaction and signals a possible political shift. The party also credited the Election Commission for ensuring a largely peaceful polling process.

On the other hand, the DMK rejected the anti-incumbency narrative, arguing that the rise in turnout is part of a long-term trend driven by increasing voter numbers and changes in electoral rolls, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Party leaders maintained that the turnout figures are not unusual and should not be overinterpreted politically.

In West Bengal, BJP leaders expressed confidence in securing a decisive mandate, linking the high turnout to voter support for change. Statements from party leaders suggested expectations of significant electoral gains, adding to the intensity of the political contest in the state.

Meanwhile, by-elections in Gujarat and Maharashtra recorded comparatively lower turnout levels, indicating varying degrees of voter engagement across regions.

With Phase 1 now complete, attention turns to the remaining phases in West Bengal and the counting of votes scheduled for May 4. The high turnout has intensified political rhetoric across parties, with each camp interpreting the numbers to its advantage. As campaigning continues in pending constituencies, the focus will remain on voter sentiment, alliances, and ground-level mobilisation, all of which will play a crucial role in determining the final outcome of Election 2026.

BJP's back broken in first phase, Mamata Banerjee will form govt for fourth time: TMC's Kunal Ghosh
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh on Saturday claimed that the party has performed strongly in the first phase of polling in the West Bengal Assembly elections and asserted that the TMC is set to retain power in the state.

Reacting to the first phase of polling, Ghosh said, "The first phase of voting is complete, the BJP's back is broken in the first phase of voting, the BJP has lost."

He further expressed confidence that the party will secure a decisive mandate under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. "Under Mamata Banerjee's leadership, the government is coming for the fourth time," he said.

Providing seat projections, Ghosh added, "We are clearly stating that out of the 152 seats where voting took place, TMC will get 125-135 seats."

He also alleged that BJP leaders were reacting out of frustration in light of the polling outcome. "BJP leaders are giving statements in frustration, understanding the situation," he said.

Ghosh further claimed that the party had gained an advantage in the first phase and its vote share would increase. "In the first phase of voting, we have received all-round benefits; on these seats, TMC's vote percentage will increase, the margin between TMC's winners and losers will widen, and TMC's seats will increase," he said.

Looking ahead to the next phase, he said the party expects an even stronger performance. "For the fourth time, our government is going to be formed; now, in the second phase, records will be set," he added.

No repoll ordered in Tamil Nadu, Bengal: EC officials
No repoll has been recommended in any of the polling stations in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu where assembly elections were held on Thursday, the EC officials said on Saturday.
While all 234 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu went to vote in a single phase, 152 seats in West Bengal voted in the first phase.

The remaining 142 seats will go to the polls on April 29.

Poll panel officials had earlier cited rules to point out that if webcasting in any of the polling stations is "deliberately" disrupted, a repoll will be ordered.

In the 2021 assembly polls in Tamil Nadu, a repoll at a polling station in Chennai was ordered as a defective paper trail machine was carried out on a two-wheeler, as the 'zonal party' of the area erroneously mistook it as an unused defective machine.

This was violative of EC orders.

'Amit Shah needs people of Bengal only for votes': TMC candidate Sirsanya Bandopadhyay targets BJP
Trinamool Congress (TMC) Uttarpara Assembly Constituency candidate Sirsanya Bandopadhyay on Saturday launched a sharp attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that he engages with the people of West Bengal only during elections and not during cultural or community occasions.

Bandopadhyay said that the Union Minister's visits are politically motivated and aimed at vote-seeking rather than people-centric engagement.

Speaking to ANI, Bandopadhyay said that the TMC has consistently worked for public welfare and highlighted the party's focus on development, including industry, MSMEs, and self-help groups in the state.

"As a TMC candidate, when we are going to public meetings, we are not only talking about the culture, but we are also talking about the development in this state and the work generation that has happened here and the further development of industry, MSME and self-help groups that are going to happen in Bengal in future..." he added.

Targeting Amit Shah over his visit to the Uttarpara Assembly constituency today, the TMC leader questioned his absence during major cultural and religious occasions in the state.

"My question to Amit Shah, who is coming to my constituency today, is why he did not come to Bengal when we were celebrating Durga Puja for seven days? Why did he not come during the Bengali New Year? Why did he not come for Eid? Why did he not come to my constituency for Shokuntala Maas Puja? So he needs people of Bengal only for the votes, and he does not intend to be connected with the people for their needs and their festivals and their days of happiness and days of sorrow..." he said.

Voting will be peaceful. Similarly, there will be widespread voting. People are in a mood for change and for the first time, they have the opportunity to vote peacefully; they will take advantage of it. Why is Mamata Banerjee afraid? She felt very sad when the police arrested 850 anti-social elements. She never worried that the common people, the civilised society, were unable to vote here.

Bengal polls: Mamata bats for communal harmony, recounts TMC leader’s help to her mother
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday underscored Hindu-Muslim unity while campaigning for TMC candidate Firhad Hakim, stating that he had once donated blood to save the CM’s mother during a medical emergency.

Addressing a rally at Bhu Kailash ground here, Banerjee said Hakim, popularly known as ‘Bobby’, stood by her during difficult times, including after her mother’s death.

Her remarks come amid a fierce political contest in the state, with Banerjee targeting the BJP leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing them of divisive politics, while reiterating her party’s commitment to social harmony in West Bengal.

“My mother needed three bottles of blood during her operation. Bobby told me not to worry. His blood group matched, and he helped save her life. What greater bond can there be than that of blood?” she said.

Highlighting Hakim’s family background, Banerjee said his mother is a Hindu and his father a Muslim, describing it as a reflection of India’s pluralistic ethos.

“This is India. In his veins flows both Hindu and Muslim blood… If a fire breaks out in a house, does it spare the neighbouring house if it belongs to someone of another community?”

“I always stand with everyone, irrespective of religion or community. I have never practised narrow politics,” the CM asserted.

Mamata slams PM Modi over JU remarks, says they undermine premier institute

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday came down heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his alleged remarks on Jadavpur University, saying such comments undermine a premier institution known for academic excellence.

In a post on X, Banerjee said she was "pained" by the prime minister's attempt to associate "anarchy" with a section of students of the university and questioned whether such remarks were in keeping with the decorum expected from the country's highest office.

"Jadavpur University has consistently secured top ranks in the government of India's NIRF framework. It is a centre of excellence. To insult its students is to insult merit, intellect and the spirit of education," Banerjee said.

Defending the students, she asserted that raising questions and participating in protests were integral to a democratic framework.

PM could enjoy boat ride on Hooghly as its water is clean unlike Yamuna: Mamata

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Friday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi could enjoy a boat ride on the Hooghly in the state because its waters were clean, unlike the Yamuna in Delhi, which she alleged was polluted.

Addressing an election meeting in Howrah, Banerjee said Modi would not be able to undertake a similar boat ride on the Yamuna in the national capital due to pollution, blaming the BJP-led administration there for the river’s condition.

She said it was good that the prime minister chose to take a boat ride on the Hooghly River, where riverfront areas had been beautified by the state government and civic bodies, including the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

Responding to Modi’s claims about women’s safety in Bengal, Banerjee said he should assess the situation himself and compare it with BJP-ruled states.

"See how safe women are here -- in the city, in the state, on the streets -- unlike BJP-ruled places like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and elsewhere, where incidents of attacks on women are reported every day," she said.

"Why do you forget about Hathras and Delhi? Please go to Manipur, which is burning. Why are you silent on Manipur?" she asked.

Referring to alleged remarks by Union Home Minister Amit Shah that "TMC tormentors will be hung upside down publicly" after May 4, Banerjee questioned whether a Union minister could issue such threats.

2026 assembly election is about resisting systematic attempt to weaken Bengal: Mamata

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday cautioned against forces trying to “impose their divisive agenda” in West Bengal, and asserted that this assembly election is about resisting a systematic attempt to “weaken” the state and control it.

Banerjee, who has been crisscrossing the state and addressing poll rallies since the last one month, said in a post on X that every attempt to “undermine” Bengal will be met with a decisive democratic pushback.

“Those sitting in Delhi, plotting to snatch Bengal’s rights and impose their agenda, should understand it clearly that the people of Bengal are watching, and they will respond through their vote. This election is about resisting a systematic attempt to weaken Bengal and control it,” the TMC supremo said.

The CM was apparently referring to the sustained campaign by central BJP leaders in the state, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and others.

“Across Chowrangee, Bhabanipur, Jadavpur and Tollyganj, I saw people turn out with clear intent, determined, united, and ready to defend Bengal, its identity, and its future. Those who believe they can run Bengal from Delhi, dictate its politics, divide its people, and distort its culture are deeply mistaken. This land has a long memory and a stronger spine,” she asserted.

Banerjee claimed that development has reached every doorstep in Bengal despite constant obstruction.

'We want academic atmosphere in Jadavpur University, not chaos': PM Modi slams West Bengal govt over institute's condition
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that "anti-national slogans" are being scrawled on the walls of Jadavpur University's campus, blaming the West Bengal government for 'failing' to save the state's largest educational institution.

Addressing an election rally in Jadavpur, PM Modi alleged that constant "threats" are being issued inside the campus, and students are forced to protest, emphasising that the campus once used to be "the bedrock of nationalism".

"Jadavpur University's name was once taken with respect around the world. This campus was founded on the bedrock of nationalism. But look at the situation here today: threats are being issued inside the campus, anti-national slogans are being scrawled on the walls, and students are being forced to take to the streets in protests instead of focusing on their studies," he said.

"We want an academic atmosphere here, not chaos. We want dialogue here, not threats. A government that cannot save its own state's largest educational institution, how will it save Bengal's future, how will it save the future of Bengal's youth?" he added.

PM further accused Mamata Banerjee of "destroying the identity of Bengal" by settling the illegal immigrants in the state.

"Bewildering.... on the one hand, Rahul Gandhi Ji is saying only Congress can defeat BJP in West Bengal and on the other hand he's saying, due to TMC's polarising politics, BJP will win West Bengal election!" he said.

Yesterday, Rahul Gandhi, appealing to people to vote for Congress, said, "If Mamata ji had run a clean govt, and had she not polarised West Bengal, there would have been no way for BJP to make inroads into Bengal."

Polling for Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and phase 1 of the West Bengal assembly elections concluded on Thursday with record-breaking voter participation, setting the tone for a high-stakes electoral battle. West Bengal recorded a turnout of 91.91%, significantly higher than Tamil Nadu’s 84.80%, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI). Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar termed it the highest-ever turnout since Independence, calling it a strong reflection of democratic engagement.

Several districts in West Bengal crossed the 90% mark, while Tamil Nadu also saw robust participation across key constituencies. Compared to the 2021 elections, both states recorded a sharp increase in voter turnout, underlining heightened political mobilisation and public interest.

However, political reactions to the turnout have been sharply divided. AIADMK leaders attributed the surge in Tamil Nadu to strong anti-incumbency against the ruling DMK, while DMK leaders dismissed such claims, arguing the percentage rise is linked to changes in voter rolls and long-term trends.

In West Bengal, BJP leaders expressed confidence of a sweeping victory, linking the high turnout to public support. With polling for remaining phases in Bengal scheduled later and counting set for May 4, the focus now shifts to post-poll narratives, alliances, and voter sentiment shaping the final outcome.
