India's Covid-19 tally breached 67-lakh mark on Wednesday with a spike of 72,049 new cases and 986 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. The national recovery rate now stands at 85.02 per cent. Stay with TOI for live updates

The Centre on Tuesday recommended use of common ayurvedic formulations, such as kadha (boiled water with herbs) and milk with turmeric in treating mild and asymptomatic Covid-19 patients as part of the national clinical management protocol based on ayurveda and yoga. Use of use of medicines such as ashwagandha, guduchi ghana vati or chyawanaprasha were prescribed for preventing the disease in high-risk people and primary contacts of patients.

Even as the total death toll due to Covid-19 mounted to 1,03,569, around 48% of deaths in the country are concentrated in 25 districts in eight states with Maharashtra alone accounting for 15 of these districts, health ministry said. There are two districts each in Karnataka, West Bengal and Gujarat and one each in Tamil Nadu, Punjab, UP and Andhra Pradesh.

While suggesting to allow festive events only outside the containment zones, the government urged people residing in the restricted areas and vulnerable population, including pregnant women, elderly and those with co-morbidities, to celebrate all festivals inside their homes. In case of rallies and immersion processions, the number of people should not exceed the prescribed limit and proper physical distancing and wearing of masks must be ensured.

The all India growth rate of confirmed cases has turned negative on a few days recently and on October 6 it stood at 0.9%. There has been a moderation of the growth rate in high caseload states like Maharashtra where it was 0.7%, while it was 0.6% in Andhra Pradesh where the curve is steep but showing signs of slowing. It is 1.1% in Karnataka, 0.9% in Tamil Nadu and 0.7% in UP.

Recovery in global trade could be disrupted by ongoing pandemic effects: WTO
Global trade is showing signs of bouncing back from the impact of the coronavirus-induced slump but any recovery could be disrupted by the ongoing pandemic effects, according to the WTO. The World Trade Organization (WTO) said it now forecasts a 9.2 per cent decline in the volume of global merchandise trade for 2020, followed by a 7.2 per cent rise in 2021.

President Donald Trump says he is symptom-free the day after returning to the White House from a hospitalization for Covid-19, his official doctor said Tuesday. "He reports no symptoms," presidential doctor Sean Conley said in a statement. Vital signs are stable and "overall he continues to do extremely well."

DCGI nod to Phase-1 human trials of 'antisera' with potential to treat Covid-19
The Drugs Controller General of India has given permission for conducting Phase-1 human clinical trial for an "antisera" that was developed by injecting inactivated SARS-CoV-2 in horses and can be a potential treatment for Covid-19, ICMR officials said on Tuesday.

About 48 per cent of the Covid-19 deaths in the country have been reported from 25 districts in eight states, of which 15 districts are in Maharashtra alone, the Health ministry said on Tuesday. Addressing a press briefing, Secretary in the ministry Rajesh Bhushan said the country has recorded the highest number of Covid-19 recoveries in the world at over 56 lakh and conducted the second-highest number of tests at 8.10 crore.

A vaccine against Covid-19 may be ready by year-end, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday, without elaborating. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for solidarity and political commitment by all leaders to ensure equal distribution of vaccines when they become available.
