NEW DELHI: The CPM's Central Committee on Friday constituted a four-member central disciplinary commission to create a mechanism to deal with these issues.
Party sources said there was a need to have a body that would look into complaints many of which go unattended. "This body does not take away the function of the Control Commission, the highest disciplinary body.
Through the new body, CC will be aware of complaints that many a times do not even come to its notice," a party leader said. The decision to have this body was taken in the CC meeting held in Kolkata two months ago.
However, party sources point out that the four-member commission has been filled with leaders considered close to general secretary Prakash Karat. Headed by S Ramachandran Pillai, the other members are Madan Ghosh, V Srinivas Rao and U Vasuki. They represent four states -- Kerala, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu -- where CPM has a strong presence.
Sources also pointed out how U Vasuki, a CC member, was at the forefront demanding action against another CC member, WR Vardarajan. The latter committed suicide after he was moved out of the central committee. Her parents -- R Umanath and Papa Umanath -- are senior party leaders.
The CC has also decided to hold an extended meeting of the Central Committee from August 7 to 10 at Vijayawada. The meeting will take place since there will be no party Congress next year due to assembly elections in West Bengal and Kerala. The meeting will evolve the party's political line for the next three years. The party congress will now be held in 2012.
The CC also conducted a mid-term review of the implementation of the organisational tasks decided in the last party congress in 2008. An examination of the work for implementing the tasks was undertaken and tasks for the future were worked out.
