TVK moves SC against Madras HC order barring MLA from floor test

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court against a Madras high court interim order restraining its MLA Srinivasa Sethupathi from participating in the Tamil Nadu Assembly confidence vote.

The petition was mentioned before a bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant by senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi. The matter is scheduled to be heard on May 13, ANI reported.

The plea was filed on behalf of the party led by Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay through advocates Dixita Gohil, Pranjal Agarwal, Rupali Samuel and Yash S Vijay.

The Madras high court had earlier restrained Sethupathi from taking part in the floor test while hearing a petition filed by former Tamil Nadu minister KR Periyakaruppan.

Periyakaruppan challenged the Tirupattur Assembly election result, alleging irregularities in the handling of postal ballots and claiming that one postal vote had been altered. Sethupathi is reported to have won the constituency by a margin of one vote.

The high court order restrained the TVK MLA from assuming office pending further proceedings in the election dispute.

LDF attacks Congress over delay in naming Kerala CM, alleges UDF ignoring mandate

The opposition Left Democratic Front on Tuesday criticised the Congress-led United Democratic Front over the delay in choosing Kerala’s next chief minister, alleging that the alliance was failing to respect the people’s mandate.

Addressing a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, senior CPI(M) leader and LDF convenor T P Ramakrishnan said the Congress and the UDF should “respect the people’s verdict", news agency PTI reported.

“The people of the state had voted in favour of the UDF to form a government. The Congress and UDF have a moral responsibility to show justice towards them in turn,” he said after attending an LDF meeting.

Ramakrishnan alleged that administrative procedures usually associated with governance were already being carried out even before the new government had formally assumed office.

He claimed that transfers of government employees were being made based on lists prepared by organisational functionaries, and said such actions were not in line with democratic practices.

The CPI(M) leader also accused the UDF of beginning “anti-people measures” and referred to reports of a rise in rice prices through Supplyco outlets.

Bengal government withdraws Abhishek Banerjee’s Z-plus security cover

The Suvendu Adhikari-led West Bengal government has withdrawn the Z-plus security cover provided to Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, marking a major rollback of security arrangements for the TMC leader after the change in regime. According to officials, the additional security personnel and pilot car facility allotted to Banerjee for over a decade will now be removed, with only the standard security cover entitled to an MP remaining in place.

The decision was reportedly taken after chief minister Suvendu Adhikari held meetings with top administrative and police officials at Nabanna, where issues related to security arrangements for politicians were discussed.

Adhikari questioned the need for extensive security deployments without a genuine threat perception and stressed that public money should not be spent to project political influence or status.

The rollback is part of a broader scaling down of security around senior Trinamool leaders since the BJP came to power in the state. Police deployment outside Abhishek Banerjee’s office and residence had already been reduced in recent days, while security arrangements around former chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence were also curtailed shortly after the government changed.

Assam CM Oath Ceremony LIVE Updates: The assembly elections across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry triggered some of the most dramatic political shifts seen in recent years, redrawing the political map in multiple states.

In West Bengal, the BJP scripted a historic breakthrough under Suvendu Adhikari, ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee and forming its first-ever government in the state. The saffron party secured a sweeping mandate by winning 207 of the 294 Assembly seats. Adhikari was sworn in as Bengal’s first BJP chief minister on Saturday in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior NDA leaders.

Tamil Nadu witnessed an equally significant political transformation as actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay emerged at the centre of a new political realignment. Vijay on Sunday took oath as the 13th chief minister of Tamil Nadu after his party secured outside support from the VCK and IUML, taking the number of supporting MLAs to 120, two above the majority mark of 118. His rise ended the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK and paved the way for Tamil Nadu’s first non-Dravidian government since 1967.

In Assam, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led the BJP to another emphatic victory, with the party leading in 74 of the state’s 126 seats while the Congress lagged far behind at 23. Sarma is set to take oath again as Assam chief minister on May 12 following the NDA’s record landslide win in the state.

Kerala, meanwhile, delivered a strong comeback for the Congress-led UDF, which secured 102 of the 140 Assembly seats. However, the alliance is yet to finalise its chief ministerial face. Senior Congress leaders V D Satheesan, K C Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala are among the frontrunners for the post.

Kerala Congress president Sunny Joseph said the final decision would be taken by the party high command in Delhi, with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi expected to announce the next chief minister soon.

In Puducherry, the NDA retained its dominance, further strengthening the alliance’s footprint in southern India and adding to the BJP-led bloc’s expanding influence across the region.
