Earlier in the day, two infants were tested positive for HMPV infection in Karnataka's Bengaluru.

Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel assured the public on Monday that there is "no need to panic", as the state government is taking all precautionary measures and following procedures similar to those used during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The two-month-old child from Rajasthan's Dungarpur has been shifted to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.

"This (HMPV) has been detected in a 2-month-old child who came from Rajasthan's Dungarpur to Sarwar. The child has been referred from Sarwar to Ahmedabad. We are following the dos and don'ts that were used during COVID, and SOPs will be issued by the state government," Minister Patel said in a statement.

The Minister further said that while the Union government has advised states to remain alert, no specific advisory has been issued for HMPV.

"There is no need to panic; no advisory has been issued by the central government yet, but it has been advised to stay alert. The state government is taking all necessary precautions," Patel added.

Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi said that this virus has been around for years, with cases typically emerging during the winter months.

"There is no need to panic. We need to remain alert and take precautions. This virus is not new; it has been there for years. Infections are more common during winter," Dr Joshi told ANI.

He explained that treatment is provided as per the symptoms, and recovery usually takes about 5 to 7 days.

"There is no vaccination or specific medication for this virus. Treatment is based on symptoms, and recovery is generally within 5-7 days," he added.

He further mentioned that people with low immunity, especially children and the elderly, are more susceptible to the infection. He advised those showing symptoms, such as fever, cold, or cough to isolate themselves.

"If necessary, use a mask. Since only one case has been reported (in the state), we must take precautions, but there is no need to panic," he added.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health said in a statement on Monday that these cases were detected as part of ICMR's ongoing efforts to monitor and control respiratory illnesses across the country.

In Karnataka, two children were detected with HMPV, including a 3-month-old female infant and an 8-month-old male infant.

The Health Ministry is continuing to monitor the situation through all available surveillance channels. Additionally, the ICMR will keep track of HMPV circulation trends throughout the year.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has been providing regular updates on the situation in China to inform public health measures.

As per officials, HMPV is a respiratory virus that is already circulating globally, including in India. It has been associated with respiratory illnesses in various countries, although there has been no unusual surge in cases in India.

The advisory emphasised precautionary measures, preparedness in healthcare facilities, and public awareness to address the increased transmission risk during winter months.

An official statement was issued to all the district magistrates and chief medical officers that, the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) respiratory disease is currently spreading globally and, like other respiratory illnesses, tends to manifest more during the winter season with symptoms resembling those of the common cold and flu. However, no cases of HMPV have been reported in Uttarakhand to date.

During the winter months, there is an increased likelihood of transmission of respiratory diseases such as seasonal influenza (H1N1, H3N2), influenza-like illness (ILI), and severe acute respiratory illness (SARI). HMPV, specifically, presents with symptoms similar to the common cold and typically resolves on its own within 3 to 5 days. As a result, there is no need for panic or misinformation regarding this illness, the release issued.

As a precautionary measure, it is mandatory to adhere to the following guidelines to prevent and protect against winter-related respiratory diseases, including HMPV.

Hospitals are required to ensure the availability of adequate isolation beds or wards, oxygen beds, ICU beds, ventilators, and oxygen cylinders for the treatment of influenza and pneumonia patients.

Additionally, they must maintain a sufficient stock of essential medicines and materials, such as PPE kits, N-95 masks, and VTM vials, while ensuring an adequate number of doctors and nursing staff at all healthcare facilities, from medical colleges to primary health centres.

Patients exhibiting symptoms of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) should be closely monitored at both the hospital and community levels. Furthermore, it is mandatory to enter the details of these patients into the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) portal under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).

If clusters of ILI or SARI cases are identified at the community level, testing facilities should be made readily available at those locations, and immediate control and prevention measures must be implemented.

The Rapid Response Team, formed under the IDSP program, is tasked with continuously monitoring any unusual situations arising from influenza or pneumonia and taking prompt action to control them.

The official release has issued guidelines to prevent respiratory diseases, including the human metapneumovirus (HMPV). The importance of wide publicity through various platforms to raise public awareness about preventing the spread of influenza- and pneumonia-related illnesses.

The guidelines recommend special care for children, elderly individuals, and those with underlying health conditions. People are advised to use a handkerchief or tissue to cover their nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing and to avoid crowded places.

Maintaining hand hygiene with soap and water is crucial, as is consuming plenty of fluids and nutritious food. Those experiencing symptoms such as cold, cough, or fever are urged to seek medical advice and only take medicines as prescribed. Symptomatic individuals should maintain distance from healthy people to prevent transmission.

They also list practices to avoid. It cautions against reusing used tissues or handkerchiefs and advises against shaking hands or coming into close contact with symptomatic individuals.

It stresses not using medication without a doctor's recommendation and avoiding touching one's eyes, nose, and mouth repeatedly. Spitting in public places should also be avoided to minimise the risk of infection.

Infant who tested positive for HMPV alright, says Ahemdabad hospital

The two-month-old infant who tested positive for the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is all right after being provided treatment in a hospital in Ahmedabad, a senior doctor said.
The HMPV was detected in a 2-month-old child who came from Rajasthan's Dungarpur to Sarwar and was later referred to Ahmedabad, state's Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said in a press statement.

This was the third recorded case of the virus in the country after two other infants tested positive for it in Karnataka.

"As of now the child is absolutely alright and is ready for discharge...The child was found MPV positive in our report," said Dr Nirav Patel, the physician of Orange Children Hospital in Ahmedabad.

According to Dr Patel, the infant had come to the hospital on December 24 with symptoms of cold, cough and breathing difficulty.

"The 2-month-old infant had come to us around 24th December with cold, cough, flu-like symptoms. Along with that, the child had a little breathing difficulty," the doctor told ANI.

The child was subsequently provided treatment for the symptoms. The doctor further assured the people that HMPV is not like the corona virus, as HMPV is a 'benign' infection which is usually self-limiting.

He added, "This is not corona-like virus...as ICU practitioners we have seen similar viruses in the last few years and we treat them accordingly. We should do routine care, if cold, fever persists for more than 2-3 days then kindly visit your doctor, paediatrician. Secondly, we also prefer that people do frequent hand washing...we don't necessarily have to do tests because this is a benign infection which is self-limiting within 4-5 days."

HMPV around for 20 years, no cause for alarm: Doctors

There is no need to panic over the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), doctors reassured on Monday, noting that only 4.6% of respiratory patients out of 739 admitted to AIIMS last year tested positive for HMPV.

This virus, which has been around for over 20 years, consistently accounts for less than 5% of respiratory infections, said Prof and Head of Microbiology Department Dr Lalit Dar. Research dating back to 2005 shows that HMPV has been present for decades. A study conducted between 2005 and 2007 found that only 3.6% (11 cases) of 301 children visiting AIIMS had tested positive. Research findings published between 2005 and 2007, along with recent data from last year, demonstrate that the situation remains largely unchanged.

Delhi health minister Saurabh Bharadwaj has asked the health and family welfare department to monitor trends and make arrangements in the city to deal with any infection from the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) after two such cases were detected in Karnataka.

The officials will have to maintain communication with the Union health ministry for regular updates regarding the capital's preparedness. In accordance with Union health ministry guidelines, it is essential for hospitals under govt of NCT Delhi to be sufficiently prepared for any increase in respiratory ailments.

Additionally, Bharadwaj instructed the health secretary to conduct daily inspections of three hospitals and submit reports covering the EDL List, medicine and ICU bed availability, equipment conditions, PSA plant status, and data entry operator presence.

Two HMPV cases in TN are stable, being monitored: TN Health Department

The two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) reported in Tamil Nadu were stable and are being monitored, the state health department said on Monday. Also, there was no significant surge in common respiratory viral pathogens that have been detected in Tamil Nadu, Additional Chief Secretary to Health & Family Welfare Department Supriya Sahu said in a release.

The release said two cases of HMPV, one from Chennai and another from Salem, were reported and that their condition was stable. They were being monitored.

Earlier, it was said that both cases were from the city. However, the health department later clarified that while one case was reported from the city, the other was from Salem. These two are the first cases to be reported in the state.

"HMPV is not new. It is an already circulating virus that was first identified in 2001. HMPV infections are self-limiting and resolve with symptomatic care, including adequate hydration and rest," the release said.

The treatment for infection is symptomatic and supportive.

Citizens need not panic, advisory to be issued: Maharashtra CM Fadnavis

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has urged citizens to remain calm following the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in some neighbouring states. He assured that the state government will soon release a detailed advisory on the matter.

A two-month-old boy in a private hospital in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, has been diagnosed with HMPV, while two cases have also been reported in Karnataka. Both states share borders with Maharashtra.

Speaking to reporters in Kolhapur, he said, "Citizens must not panic. The state health department will soon issue a comprehensive advisory on the situation. It is not a new virus. It is coming again. We will reissue an advisory regarding the virus."

The situation is being monitored closely and the Union health ministry and state health officials are in touch to assess it, he added. The Union health ministry has emphasised that HMPV is already in circulation globally, including in India, and cases of respiratory illnesses associated with it have been reported in various countries Maharashtra health minister Prakash Abitkar said there was no need to panic, adding that instructions to implement necessary measures have been issued to all health services in the state.

"A meeting on the issue will be convened in a couple of days. People just need to follow guidelines and instructions issued by the health department. Mumbai's civic body on Monday said no Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) case has been found in the metropolis. In a release, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the Union and Maharashtra governments have assured that the HMPV strain found in China does not pose a significant concern and necessary precautions are being taken to prevent its spread. "The public has been reassured that there is no need for unnecessary panic. Not a single case of the HMPV virus infection has been found in Mumbai. The Directorate of Health Services, Pune, has already issued a set of guidelines on January 3 outlining preventive measures after the reports of an outbreak of HMPV in China surfaced in the media," it said.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said no Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases have so far been detected in the state. A two-month-old boy admitted to a private hospital in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, has been detected with HMPV infection, while two cases were reported from Karnataka.

"In Bangalore, two cases have been reported. Here, we are yet to detect any such case. Our chief secretary has already held a meeting and taken precautionary measures," Banerjee told reporters here.

Banerjee is on a two-day visit to the Sagar Island in South 24 Parganas to take stock of preparations for the Ganga Sagar Mela (religious congregation) to be held later this month.

"We do not have any such alerts in this connection (HMPV cases). In case there are any, I will let you know. Our government is always in service of people; you have seen that during the Covid pandemic," the chief minister said.

With two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) detected in Karnataka, chief minister Siddaramaiah on Monday said he has directed the health and medical education departments to take all the precautionary measures. "There is information on HMPV or China virus infection in Karnataka. I have instructed the health department to take precautionary measures, I have also spoken to health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. We -- Health and Medical Education departments -- will take all the precautionary measures to control it," Siddaramaiah said.

Briefing reporters here, he said the infections have been detected in two children. "Though it is not a dangerous virus, precautionary measures need to be taken."

"Whatever measures the health department suggests, the government will support all those measures."

The Indian Council of Medical Research has detected two cases of HMPV in Karnataka through routine surveillance for multiple respiratory viral pathogens, the Union health ministry earlier said on Monday. A three-month-old female infant with a history of bronchopneumonia was diagnosed with HMPV after being admitted to Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru. She has already been discharged, the ministry said.

On the HMPV virus, Additional Professor for Internal Medicine at AIIMS Delhi, Dr Neeraj Nischal said, "Let's not compare this (HMPV) with Covid-19 because that was a completely new virus and none of us had immunity against it... HMPV has been described since 2001, and even based on evidence, it dates back to the late 1950s... By the age of 10, the majority of the children develop immunity against this..."

HMPV cases in Karnataka: Saurabh Bhardwaj asks Delhi Health Department to make necessary arrangements

In the wake of two human metapneumoviruses (HMPV) cases in Karnataka, Delhi health minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Monday asked the Health and Family Welfare Department to make all required arrangements in Delhi.

In the order, Bharadwaj said that all hospitals should be completely prepared to handle any potential increase in respiratory illness as per the advice of the Union Health Ministry.

"The health and FW department should contact the Union health ministry to get timely updates about preparedness in the capital. There is no need to delay action, bring issues to me immediately over the phone if directives are needed. It is important that the Hospitals of the Government of NCT of Delhi should be well-equipped to handle any potential increase in respiratory illness as per the advice of Union Health Ministry," the minister said.

The Delhi health minister also directed the Delhi Health Secretary to inspect three hospitals daily and submit reports.

"The health secretary will report the Essential Drug List (EDL), medicine and ICU bed availability, condition of equipment, and PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) plants," he said.

A two-month-old boy admitted to a private hospital in Ahmedabad has been detected with Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection, an official said on Monday. Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel asked people not to panic and said the state government has made preparations to tackle the viral infection.

The infant, who hails from Dungarpur in Rajasthan, was admitted to the hospital, located in Chandkheda locality here, on December 24 with symptoms of respiratory infection.

After tests, he was found positive for the HMPV, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's in-charge medical officer of health Bhavin Solanki said.

"HMPV (infection) was detected in the patient on December 26, but we learnt about it today as the private hospital reported it to us late," Solanki said.

The patient was kept in isolation, the official said.

Earlier, the child was kept on a ventilator, and his condition is stable now, Solanki said.
