Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind wants steps to protect minorities in Bangladesh

AGARTALA: The apex body of Islamic believers - Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind on Monday condemned the recent spates of violence and attacks on minority Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians in Bangladesh, which sparked a serious reaction in Tripura.

Besides holding rallies and solidarity marches against the incidents in Bangladesh, all the political parties in the state demanded intervention of Indian government against the interim administration of Bangladesh while ruling BJP’s ally in the government TIPRA Motha founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman warned to curb out a separate country from the territory of Bangladesh for minorities.

Thousands of intellectuals and social activists held a solidarity rally in Agartala on Sunday. They submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu seeking India’s intervention for the protection of minorities in Bangladesh. After that, Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind came out with a statement seeking action against the perpetrators.

They called for immediate action to ensure the safety and security of minority communities in the neighboring country. President of Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind state chapter, Mufti Taibur Rahman, condemned the recent violence in Bangladesh’s Khagrachari district on the tribals belonging to religious minorities.

"The atrocities faced by minorities in Bangladesh are unacceptable. Islam does not support violence, and these recent events are deeply condemnable. We stand against any harm done to minorities," Rahman stated and added that they will also submit a memorandum to the Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Agartala to protect its minorities and uphold communal harmony.

Rahman, however, expressed concern over a violent incident in Ranirbazar three weeks ago, where homes belonging to 34 families were destroyed by fire after reports of the defacement of a Kali idol.

"We strongly condemn both the attack on the temple in Ranirbazar and the retaliatory violence against minority families. We demand strict action against those involved and call for full compensation for the victims who lost their homes," he added.
