LAC agreement

On Monday, India announced that both countries had reached an agreement on patrolling arrangements along the LAC, leading to disengagement and resolution of the issues that arose after the standoff in 2020. In its initial response, Beijing said that China and India have maintained close communication regarding border issues through diplomatic and military channels. (Photo: PTI)

Old conflict

In May 2020, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) crossed into areas traditionally claimed and patrolled by India. Since then, New Delhi and Beijing have engaged in negotiations, claiming to have resolved disputes over the LAC alignment in three regions: Galwan Valley, Gogra-Hot Springs, and the Pangong Lake area. The conflict peaked in the same year when twenty Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers died in hand-to-hand combat in the Galwan Valley in Ladakh. It was the first deadly clash between the two nations in nearly 60 years. In September 2022, both Indian and Chinese forces mutually pulled back from the Gogra-Hot Springs region in Ladakh.(Photo: PTI)
