Kolkata metro orange line finally connects Chingrighata 62-metre missing link

The long-pending 62-metre viaduct gap at Chingrighata on the Orange Line has been successfully bridged after years of delay, marking a major construction milestone on the corridor.

The Chingrighata crossing was the critical missing link on the New Garia–Airport Orange Line, where the viaduct alignment remained incomplete. The completion restores continuity across this major section of the metro route.

The final girder launching work at the site was completed using planned night traffic blocks over successive weekends, enabling safe installation of precast segments across the busy EM Bypass junction.

The Chingrighata work formed part of a larger 366-metre viaduct gap closure project, which required phased deck launching between multiple pier sections under controlled traffic conditions.

Chingrighata is one of the busiest intersections on EM Bypass, making viaduct construction technically complex due to heavy traffic movement and the need for diversions during construction activities.

Construction was carried out in phases, including sequential deck launches between pier segments, ensuring structural continuity while minimizing disruption to traffic flow at the crossing.

Authorities implemented weekend and night-time traffic blocks to execute the girder launching safely, allowing uninterrupted construction windows while restoring normal traffic soon after completion.

The bridging of this gap is considered a key milestone for completing the Orange Line’s remaining elevated section, which will ultimately connect New Garia, Salt Lake Sector V, and the airport corridor.
