Rajasthan Election Results 2023 Highlights: Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot tenders resignation to Governor
The BJP crossed the halfway mark in Rajasthan on Sunday, winning 100 seats out of the 199 where assembly elections took place. According to the latest assembly poll results and trends available on the Election Commission website, the BJP won 100 seats and was ahead in 15. The Congress, which was hoping to buck the trend of the incumbent being voted out in the state every five years, bagged 58 seats and was ahead in 11. In the remaining 15 seats, candidates of parties such as the Bharat Adivasi Party and the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party and Independents have either won or are ahead. A party has to win 100 seats for a simple majority in the state. Polling in 199 of the state's 200 seats were held on November 25. The election in Sriganganagar's Karanpur seat was postponed due to the death of the Congress candidate. Four of seven BJP MPs who fought the Rajasthan Assembly elections won their respective seats while three others lost the polls. Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) convener and Nagaur MP Hanuman Beniwal also won from the Khinwsar assembly constituency by defeating BJP candidate Rewant Ram with a narrow margin of 2,059 votes. In Rajasthan, Vasundhara Raje, the two-term CM, is also far from being a surefire bet because of the leadership's reservations about her style of functioning. Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, long considered a possibility in view of his performance in the water resources ministry, especially the push for bringing tap water to each household, remains a strong contender in case the leadership finally decides to consider fresh options.

Not when you are talking about a three-time CM of India's largest state, a doughty survivor who's been Union minister under three PMs - Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and P V Narasimha Rao - and staved off a rebellion in his ranks that would have brought down most governments.But the ravages of Rajasthan's latest electoral fight may have left this battle-hardened Congress general's political career scarred for good, never mind the state's history of voting out the incumbent every five years.

From graft to paper leaks and discontent among the youth, Pilot had drawn attention, repeatedly, to the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government's failure to address the issues that BJP eventually attacked the party with. The Congress leader even staged a sit-in to reiterate his concerns just months before Rajasthan went to polls, a move that many saw as a couched rebellion against the Gehlot government for his unceremonious ouster from the government earlier. So, when the Rajasthan results poured in on Sunday afternoon and delivered Congress a drubbing, it likely served as a bitter-sweet moment for the "rebel".

Vasundhara Raje's return to prominence in Rajasthan politics at 70 isn't just another sidelight in a famous BJP victory. It marks her out as an outlier in a pantheon of BJP veterans who have survived - and prospered - in no small part due to the blessings of the central leadership. On Sunday, Raje retained the Jhalrapatan seat by a margin of 53,000-odd votes, while two of her primary opponents within the party - leader of the opposition Rajendra Rathore and deputy leader Satish Poonia- were defeated.

Shocker for Congress on tribal turf; BJP sweeps Bastar and Surguja
The biggest blow for the Congress came in the tribal-dominated areas of the state. In the Bastar belt, BJP won eight of the 12 seats after being reduced to zero in the previous election. It also made a clean sweep of the tribal-dominated Surguja region of Chhattisgarh, winning all the 14 seats that the Congress had secured in the 2018 assembly polls.Those who bit the dust included Chhattisgarh deputy chief minister TS Singhdeo, who lost his Ambikapur seat. Singhdeo, the present maharaja of the Surguja estate, was a potential contender for chief ministership this time.

While Gehlot and his party were hoping to retain power on the plank of free schemes and guarantees, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which contested the polls without naming its chief ministerial candidate, had the last laugh. According to political analysts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the election campaign from the front played a crucial role in helping the BJP emerge triumphant in the desert state.

Most of the religious leaders fielded by BJP, including Balmukund Acharya, Baba Balaknath, Narayan Puri and Otaram Dewasi, won the Rajasthan assembly elections, most of them with comfortable margin. They attributed their victories to the good governance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre and rampant corruption and bad law-and-order situation in Rajasthan under chief minister Ashok Gehlot. All these winners stated that the voters have bluntly rejected the appeasement politics of Congress and hoped that in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections too, Congress will bite the dust.

The BJP wrested Rajasthan on Sunday, winning 115 seats out of the 199 where polling took place as the Congress failed to buck the state's three-decade revolving-door trend in which the voters reject the party in power. The Congress won from 69 seats. A slew of welfare schemes introduced by the Ashok Gehlot government in the run-up to the November 25 assembly polls fell flat before the aggressive BJP campaign, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
