Vijay’s TVK party emerges as formidable force in Tamil Nadu; all you need to know about its journey
NEW DELHI: Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is emerging as a formidable force in Tamil Nadu, with trends suggesting a dramatic rise for the debutant outfit, challenging established players like DMK and AIDMK in the state.
According to early data from the Election Commission of India, Tamil Nadu is witnessing a rare three-way contest. According to early trends, Vijay's party has crossed majority mark and surged past the ruling DMK, with AIADMK on the the third spot. However, trends reflected across television networks suggest a far stronger surge for TVK, with projections indicating the party could outperform both the DMK and AIADMK alliances and can potentially form government in the state on its own.
This marks a striking departure from pre-poll expectations. Most exit polls had predicted a comfortable return for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance under Chief Minister M. K. Stalin. Surveys by India Today-Axis My India and Times Now-JVC, however, stood out for forecasting a strong debut for TVK. The Axis My India poll projected TVK winning between 98 and 120 seats, placing it in direct competition with the DMK, which was projected to secure 92–110 seats.
His journey
Vijay formally launched TVK in 2024, positioning it as a people-centric alternative to Tamil Nadu’s entrenched Dravidian parties. His campaign blended welfare promises with anti-corruption messaging and youth outreach, drawing massive crowds and leveraging his widespread popularity across the state. The party’s early performance suggests that this appeal may have translated into electoral traction far quicker than anticipated.
Since its inception, Vijay has steered the party away from traditional alliance-building, choosing instead to focus on a solo debut aimed at capturing the youth and anti-incumbency vote. The party’s platform, centered on "social justice and transparent governance," appears to have resonated deeply across both urban and rural belts.
Tamil Nadu is among the key states, alongside Assam, West Bengal and Kerala, and the Union Territory of Puducherry that went to polls in April. While voting concluded on April 23 in Tamil Nadu, the focus has now shifted to whether TVK’s surge will sustain through counting and convert into a historic mandate.
If current trends hold, TVK’s rise could signal a structural shift in Tamil Nadu politics, breaking the long-standing bipolar dominance of the DMK and AIADMK. For Vijay, it would mark one of the most successful political debuts in recent memory—transforming him from a cinema icon into a central player in the state’s power equation.
