5 fruits that could be triggering your acne

Can fruits cause acne?

Acne is usually blamed on stress, skincare products, and hormones. But our diet plays a significant role, especially in the case of a sudden breakout. If you believe reducing sugar and oily food will benefit you, you may not have considered the impact of your fruit choices. While fruits are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and skin-friendly nutrients, some fruits naturally high in sugar may worsen acne. Let’s take a look at some of them.

2/6

Bananas

Bananas are rich in potassium, but overly ripe bananas contain a higher glycaemic load, meaning they can spike blood sugar levels quickly. These fruits might trigger insulin fluctuations in the body and increase sebum production in an inflammatory situation, especially if you have acne-prone skin. If you’re someone dealing with hormonal acne, consuming bananas every day might not be a good choice for you.

Mangoes

It might hurt a bit, but the king of fruits and everyone’s summer favourite, mangoes, are known for their high sugar content, which makes them delicious. But excessive mango consumption may contribute to inflammation and increased oil production in some people. However, the issue stems not from the fruit itself but from excessive consumption.

Grapes

Grapes are rich in antioxidants but are also known for their natural sugar content. So, if you’re eating large bowls of grapes every day, it can increase your blood sugar levels, especially when consumed without fibre-rich foods. Also, avoid consuming fruit juices, which worsen acne flare-ups, particularly those found in supermarkets.

Oranges

Oranges or any citrus fruits do not directly cause acne flare-ups, but their acidic nature can irritate your sensitive skin if you consume too much. Acidic fruit usually disrupts the skin barrier and triggers irritation-related breakouts in certain people. This is seen more commonly in people who deal with sensitive or even reactive skin, rather than acne-prone skin. So, it's better to rinse your face after consuming these fruits to avoid irritation.

Dried fruits

If you’re a fan of dried apricots, raisins, and dates, stop consuming them in excess amounts, as the drying process removes water, which increases the glycaemic load compared to fresh fruits. These can be your potential acne aggravators because they rapidly increase insulin levels and inflammation.
