Top ingredients to avoid

Sensitive skin quickly reacts to certain products, often leading to redness, itchiness, acne, and more. That’s why one needs to be mindful of what goes on your facial skin. Not every skin product can be a friendly pick, as every product has its ingredients that should not be preferred by sensitive-skinned girls. These harsh ingredients can still be used on combination skin, but sensitive skin gets easily triggered, leading to intense breakouts or dryness, which can become a problem in the long term. Thus, avoid these 5 ingredients on your face under all conditions if you have sensitive skin.

2/6

Alcohol

While some types of alcohol, like fatty alcohols, are safe for the face as they are hydrating, denatured alcohol or ethanol can dry out your skin and disrupt the natural barrier. Any kind of synthetic fragrance with SD alcohol and some strong exfoliants can lead to redness and inflammation. These reactions also trigger other ingredients, such as SLS and preservatives, to react with your skin, causing intense breakouts and rashes.

Essential oils

Though considered natural, many essential oils like peppermint, rosemary, lavender, citrus, and tea tree can be harsh on sensitive skin. They may cause redness, stinging, or allergic reactions like dermatitis, especially when exposed to sunlight or used in high concentrations. These oils can also disrupt your skin’s barrier and clog pores, leading to acne.

Fragrances

Fragrances are one of the most common reasons behind allergic reactions on sensitive skin. Whether natural or synthetic, fragrances can irritate the skin, leading to dryness, itchiness, and redness. Products labelled as “unscented” may still contain masking agents. Always opt for homemade masks or choose products that clearly say “fragrance-free.”

5/6

SLS, aka sodium Lauryl Sulphate

This harsh cleansing agent is found in foaming cleansers, shampoos, conditioners, and body washes. It removes dirt and oil but also strips the skin’s natural moisture, making it too harsh for sensitive skin. Try switching to sulphate-free products for a gentler cleanse.

Parabens and formaldehyde releasers

Preservatives are necessary to prevent bacterial growth in products, but some, like parabens and formaldehyde releasers, can irritate sensitive skin. These preservatives can mimic oestrogen and interfere with hormones. Instead, look for safer options like phenoxyethanol or preservative-free formulas.
