Why is vitamin C essential for our skin?

Vitamin C is one of the most searched skincare products online, and for all the good reasons. From brightening dull skin to reducing pigmentation, it boosts collagen production and protects your skin against environmental damage. Usually, store-bought versions are quite expensive and filled with chemical preservatives. But what if we tell you that you can make your own natural serum at home? Let’s find out how.

Ingredients to collect

Before you start, use only pure vitamin C powder, i.e., L-ascorbic acid, which is the most effective form of vitamin C. Start with a 5-10% concentration, and store the solution in a dark glass bottle, as vitamin C oxidises quickly when exposed to sunlight and air. Lastly, we need to make small batches of these serums, which will easily last up to 2 weeks.

How to make it?

Take 1 teaspoon of pure L-ascorbic acid powder with 2 teaspoons of distilled water, 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin, and 2 drops of vitamin E oil for stability. Now, wash and sanitise all your utensils and containers, mix the vitamin C powder with your distilled water, and wait until it fully dissolves. Add some glycerin and vitamin E oil, and then stir well. Pour it into a dark glass dropper bottle, and then store it in the refrigerator.

How to use this?

For maximum effect, start by applying two to three drops to clean, dry skin every morning over the entire face. Lock it up with a moisturiser and then apply your sunscreen. Vitamin C usually increases sun sensitivity, so sunscreen is absolutely non-negotiable. Also, know when you should discard your vitamin C serum. Fresh vitamin C is usually very clean and pale, so if your serum starts turning yellow or brown, or smells metallic or strange, understand that something is wrong. Also, if it causes unusual irritation, simply toss it away.

Benefits and mistakes to avoid

Making your own vitamin C serum at home is an affordable pick compared to luxury brands. It has no unnecessary preservatives and can easily be customised for maximum potency. Common mistakes to avoid include using tap water instead of distilled water, making large batches, skipping sunscreen, storing it in clear containers, and using metal spoons, as they can react with your ingredients.

Final thoughts

Making vitamin C serum at home is an affordable, effective, and safe option as long as one follows proper hygiene, correct concentration, and all storage methods. But if you experience irritation or have sensitive skin, consulting a dermatologist can be the safer option. Remember that to achieve bright and glowing skin, consistency and strength are a must, so start slow, protect your skin barrier, and seal the deal with your sunscreen.
