Ozempic skincare trend is rising: Here’s what you should know

What Exactly Is “Ozempic Face”?

As GLP‑1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy become widely used for weight loss, a cosmetic phenomenon called “Ozempic face” has drawn attention. Experts now say rapid weight loss, not the drug itself, is causing facial thinning, sagging skin, and deeper wrinkles, prompting a rise in aesthetic interventions. Rapid weight loss caused by GLP‑1 drugs often leads to facial fat loss, resulting in hollow cheeks, sagging jowls, and accentuated wrinkles. The effect may resemble accelerated aging even in relatively young adults.

Aesthetic Responses Rising Fast

The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) reported a 50% rise in fat grafting procedures over 2024, with one in four surgeons noting a demand increase for fillers and tightening treatments linked to GLP‑1 use.
Injectables such as hyaluronic acid fillers (e.g., Juvederm) and collagen stimulators like Sculptra are frequently used to restore lost volume. Treatments like radiofrequency microneedling, Ultherapy, and Sofwave are also gaining popularity. A retrospective imaging study found an average 9% midface volume loss, with superficial fat dropping around 11% and deep pads about 7% translating to roughly 7% volume lost per 10 kg body weight reduction.

Experts describe the skin’s quality in GLP‑1 users as akin to an “old, overused rubber band,” with the SMAS layer often thinner and weaker—a sign that structural skin support is compromised.

Why the Trend Has Gained Attention? And Prevention & Management Strategies

The label “Ozempic face” is widely used even though the same effects occur after any rapid weight loss, such as bariatric surgery or calorie restriction.

Dermatologists note that skin elasticity does not keep pace with fast fat reduction, so the face loses volume before the skin can contract. Slow the weight loss pace; losing 1–2 lbs per week can allow the skin time to adapt and re-tighten.

Eat enough protein and hydration, plus key nutrients like B vitamins and iron, to support collagen and elastin production.
The Times

Maintain skin barrier health with ceramides, peptides, hyaluronic acid, and daily sunscreen.

Wait at least six months after major weight loss before considering cosmetic fillers or surgery, giving facial volume time to settle.

Is it a potential threat to your skin?

Ozempic is generally safe for the skin, but only if used under medical guidance. But its rapid weight loss can lead to skin sagging and wrinkles because of reduced fat and collagen. You can also experience mild redness, swelling, and itching on the injection site, but if it gets serious, then it's a super rare skin condition.

The Role of Aesthetic Clinics and Brands

Clinics are now offering integrated care combining dermatology, nutrition, and nonsurgical procedures aimed specifically at GLP‑1 users. The goal is preemptive management rather than reactive fixes.

Beauty brands are developing products targeting elasticity and hydration in users of GLP‑1 therapies—marketing collagen-boosting serums and peptides to support skin during weight transition. Ozempic face is a real cosmetic concern stemming from rapid weight loss via GLP‑1 drugs, not from the medications themselves. Facial volume loss, sagging skin, and accelerated wrinkles are most often addressed by fillers, skin tightening treatments, or fat grafting.
