An American novelist and lawyer known for his popular legal thrillers, Grisham has written 28 consecutive number-one bestsellers, and his books have sold 300 million copies worldwide. Furthermore, he is one of the only three authors to have sold two million copies on the first printing. Today, as he turns a year older, here is a look at seven memorable John Grisham books made into movies.

​A Time to Kill (1989)

Set in Canton, Mississippi, the novel revolves around a fearless young lawyer and his assistant while they defend a black man accused of murdering two white men who raped his ten-year-old daughter, inciting violent retribution and revenge.

​The Firm (1991)

A young lawyer joins a small but prestigious law firm only to find out that most of their clients are on the wrong side of the law. The company is helping to launder mob money, get clients off charges, and even murder partners who threaten to blow their cover. But when the FBI comes calling to gather evidence on the lawyer's colleagues, he is caught between a rock and a hard place, juggling his life and his liberty.

​The Client (1993)

It centers on a young boy who witnessed the suicide of a mafia lawyer and hires an attorney to protect him when the District Attorney tries to use him to take down a mob family. Mark Sway is an 11-year-old boy who lives with his mother and brother in a trailer.

​The Chamber (1994)

It centers on twenty-six-year-old Adam Hall, who stands on the brink of a brilliant legal career. However, now he is risking it all for a death-row killer and an impossible case. Maximum Security Unit, Mississippi State Prison: Sam Cayhall is a former Klansman and unrepentant racist now facing the death penalty for a fatal bombing in 1967.

It follows the case of Celeste Wood, the widow of Jacob Wood, who has died from lung cancer after years of smoking three packs of Bristols a day, versus Pynex, one of the Big Four tobacco companies in the United States.

​The Innocent Man (2006)

Grisham's only non-fiction title, the book tells the story of Ronald 'Ron' Keith Williamson of Ada, Oklahoma, a former minor league baseball player who was wrongly convicted in 1988 of the rape and murder of Debra Sue Carter in Ada and was sentenced to death. After serving 11 years on death row, he was exonerated by DNA evidence and other material introduced by the Innocence Project and was released in 1999. A popular OTT platform released 'The Innocent Man', a six-part documentary series based on the book, in December 2018.
