7 Oscar-nominated films you never knew were based on books
The Oscars, also known as Academy Awards, are regarded by many as the most prestigious and significant awards in the entertainment industry worldwide. Given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the awards are international recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements. This year, the 94th Oscars have been scheduled for March 27. Since Oscar night is not far away, here is a look at seven books that inspired Oscar-nominated movies.
Call Me by Your Name
The movie is based on the 2007 book 'Call Me By Your Name' by Andre Aciman. Set in Northern Italy in 1983, it follows the journey of self-discovery and the romantic relationship between 17-year-old Elio Perlman, and his father's American assistant, Oliver.

The Disaster Artist
Based on the 2014 book of the same name by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell, it is a comedy-drama that traces the making of Tommy Wiseau's 2003 'The Room' - the cult film widely regarded as being one of the worst of all time.

Victoria & Abdul (2017)
It is based on Shrabani Basu's 2010 book 'Victoria & Abdul: the True Story of the Queen’s Closet Confidant', and chronicles the extraordinary and unlikely real-life relationship between Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and her Indian Muslim servant Abdul Karim.

Darkest Hour
Based on Anthony McCarten's 2017 book 'The Darkest Hour', it takes us inside the mind of one of the world's greatest leaders - Winston Churchill - and provides a revisionist, more rounded portrait of his leadership. In doing so, it revises the familiar view of Churchill - he made himself into the iconic figure we remember and changed the course of history, but through those turbulent and dangerous weeks, he was plagued by doubt and even explored a peace treaty with Nazi Germany.

An adaptation of the 2014 book of the same name by Molly Bloom, it tells the true-life story of the 26-year-old woman who set up the most exclusive high-stakes underground poker game in the world - at a huge cost.

Mudbound
The movie is based on the 2008 book by Hillary Jordan. It revolves around two veterans - one black and one white - returning to rural Mississippi following World War II, to address racism, prejudice, and their own experiences with post-traumatic stress disorder.

It is an adaptation of the 2012 book of the same name. When 16-year-old John Paul Getty III is kidnapped, his mother Gail desperately tries to convince his billionaire grandfather to pay the ransom.
