​ International Mother Language Day 2024

India is a land of diverse languages, cultures and traditions. And so, Indian mother tongue or mother languages are just as diverse! From the Kumaoni language of Kumaon region to Kannada when we come down South, the diversity in Indian languages is brilliant.
In India, our mother language is not just a means of communication for us but also a big part of our cultural identity. Reading books in our mother tongue helps more people and more sections of society be able to access literature.
So today, on the occasion of International Mother Language Day, Parag-- an initiative by Tata Trusts-- shares their list of five Indian authors who have not only done exceptionally well in the field of children’s literature but also won the Big Little Book Award (BLBA). The theme of this year's
International Mother Language Day is ‘Multilingual education is a pillar of intergenerational learning’. Read on to know more.

​Madhuri Purandare, writes in Marathi

Madhuri Purandare is a woman who excels as both an artist and a writer. She has written a plethora of children's and young adult books, which she has not only authored and illustrated but also skillfully translated into Marathi from notable French works. Renowned for her understanding of childhood and innovative writing approach, Madhuri has earned prestigious accolades, including the Sahitya Academy Award in 2014. Her most famous works are - ‘Ghotala’, ‘Kumarswar Ek Gadharva Katha’ and ‘Vachu Anande’ among others.

​Nabaneeta Dev Sen wrote in Bangla

Nabaneeta was a celebrated Bengali poet, writer, and scholar who has authored over 80 books in Bengali, across genres such as poetry, novels, short stories, plays. She has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri, Bangla Academy Lifetime Achievement Award, and Sahitya Akademi Award. Her writing, characterised by spontaneity and profound life experiences, resonated deeply with readers. Despite her passing in 2019 from cancer, her impactful legacy continues to inspire and influence generations.
Her most famous work includes ‘Rupkotha Samagra’ and more.

​Nagesh Hegde, writes in Kannada

Nagesh Hegde is an author, journalist, environmentalist, publisher, translator, and professor. He has a knack for simplifying complex subjects with humour and wit, especially in his children's books. His writings in Kannada have become integral educational material, featured in textbooks from primary schools to universities in Karnataka. Hegde has received several prestigious awards, including the Rajyotsava Award and a lifetime achievement award from the Science and Technology Academy.
His most famous works include - ‘Kereyali Chinna’, ‘Hallimukka Yellel Hokka’ and more.

​Prof. S. Sivadas, writes in Malayalam

Professor Sivadas is a prolific writer with over 200 books for children to his name. Influenced by his own childhood adventures and a love for nature and science, his writings have left a lasting impression on Malayalam children's literature. His contributions have earned him numerous accolades and scholarships, both from the Government of India and the Government of Kerala, in recognition of his work in children's and science literature.
Some of his best works include - ‘Unarthum Kathakal Valarthum Kathakal’, ‘Beerbal Kathakal’, ‘101 Nalla Nadan Kathakal’ and ‘Keeyo Keeyo’.

​Prabhat, writes in Hindi

Prabhat is a famous poet and author who lovingly covers the joys of childhood in his writings. A mix of imagination, humour, and empathy-- his work stands out in modern children's literature. His ability to address challenging topics with a sense of ease has earned him widespread acclaim.
His notable works are - ‘Cycle ka Sapna’, ‘Kaisa Kaisa Khana’ and ‘Lightning’.
