Lohri is one of the most prominent festivals for Sikhs and Hindus, celebrated primarily in the North Indian states of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. The festival marks the end of the winter solstice and harvesting of the rabi crops. The day falls every year on January 13.



As per traditional folklore, the word Lohri is made up of the word 'lo', which means a big tava, used for preparing the feast for the community.

The origin of Lohri can be traced back from the tale of Dulla Bhatti, a legendary hero of Punjab who led a rebellion against Mughal emperor Akbar. He received appreciation for his bravery and is mentioned in every Lohri song.

On this day, the thank the Sun and the fire for the good harvest. A huge bonfire is lit in the courtyards or parks in the evening. Small idols of Lohri Goddess made with cattle dung are placed beneath the fire. People also don colourful clothes and circle around the fire and throw sesame seeds, jaggery, and rewaries in it. They sing and dance all night to welcome the warm summer days.
