It’s not just 'Queen' Kangana Ranaut - here are some actors who were turned away by fashion designers

Bollywood actress and politician Kangana Ranaut recently called out fashion designer Masaba Gupta after she allegedly refused to let her wear a saree from her label back in 2023. It was during her visit to the Ram Janmabhoomi ceremony in Ayodhya, when Masaba allegedly asked the actress' stylist not to use the saree for the occasion, but since Kangana had already worn the saree by the time the communication was made, she was asked not to tag Masaba on social media. But, if you think it's uncommon in the entertainment world, then it's absolutely not, as there are a handful of actors and some public figures, who have also met the same fate.

Zendaya’s stylist, Law Roach, once revealed that the singer and actress was rejected by many top fashion houses during the early days of her career. Her team used to approach these high-end labels but mostly rejected them, whereas he later on took names and called out Valentino, Gucci, Chanel, Dior, and Saint Laurent. The houses used to cancel her out, calling her ‘too green’ and saying, ‘She’s not on our calendar.’

Beyoncé facing rejection is hard to swallow, but it is true. Beyoncé faced rejection during the early days of her career, when she was a part of the Destiny’s Child. Many fashion labels were hesitant to dress her, as they really didn’t wish to dress four Black and curvy women and thought about whether they would be able to afford the items or not. Her mother and uncle usually made up the initial costumes for them.

The first lady of the United States, Melania Trump, has also faced rejection from top-notch designers. In 2016, designer Sophie Theallet publicly refused to dress her and urged other designers like Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, and Philip Lim to do the same. After she wore a pale blue Ralph Lauren outfit, hashtags of ‘boycottralphlauren’ started to trend online, where the critics of Trump’s politics stayed first in line.

Despite her rising fame, fashion houses and designers were hesitant to work with her because of her reality television background and called her personality ‘cheesy’.

Diljit Dosanjh was not given the original Patiala Necklace for his Met Gala appearance, as Cartier stated that this iconic piece was ‘sealed away’ in a museum. He did get a replica created instead, which looked the same as the original one, but this sparked debate over cultural heritage access, especially when the jewellery house gave it to American influencer Emma Chamberlain for her Met Gala appearance in 2022.
