Rise of the counterfeit culture

Counterfeit goods bought and sold in India are not a new thing. From dupes of luxury brands such as Adidas and Gucci, sold like cakes with minor logo and quality changes, the market of counterfeit items has existed in various forms for decades across the globe. However, when globalisation opened the gates to international brands, many Indians found themselves unable to afford the real deal. But many shopping apps brought some of the viral products’ dupes to the market, which saw the light and turned out to be a hit. Let’s take a look at some viral-dupe fashion and beauty products that are being sold like hot cakes across India.

Rhode Phone Case with Lip Gloss

The most viral sensation of the season was Hailey Bieber’s Rhode lip treatment, attached to a matching phone case, which was an instant hit in the market. Not officially available in India, there are some websites that sell this combo for less than Rs 1,000. The original price of this Rhode kit starts from Rs 4,779; however, legitimate Indian websites and shopping applications have created a dupe of this viral product, which came into the spotlight after influencers started to preach about it on Instagram.

Benefit Benetint cheek and lip tint

Benefit’s Benetint cheek and lip tint is the bestselling lip stain provided by the company, which goes out of stock every now and then. A viral product, which is always on every other girl’s beauty cart, is being sold on shopping platforms in India under Rs 500. This custom-made tint, which was initially created for an exotic dancer in 1976, starts from Rs 3,450 and is available on Tira Beauty and Nykaa in India. You can directly purchase the original from their website. However, on some local apps you can get the dupe of this product only at Rs 113.

Dior Lip Oil

Dior’s Glow Lip Oil has been a viral sensation since its inception in 2020. The distinctive bottle look with an intense fragrance and shine is every ‘it’ girl’s dream. Dior was one of the first brands to start the culture of lip oils, which was soon adopted by other brands across the globe. The original Dior lip oil is priced at Rs 4,100, but on some Indian platforms, you can get this viral product’s dupe for just Rs 330. Crazy, right?

Coco Chanel perfume

Chanel does not even need an introduction, as it is one of the pillars of the fashion industry across the globe. This luxury brand has a meticulous range of perfumes, but the Coco Chanel viral perfume took over the streets across the globe, with people selling the dupes like hot cakes. Some Indian shopping platforms are selling the dupes of this luxury perfume for just Rs 3,039. However, the original bottle is priced at Rs 13,000. Don’t worry; India has everything for everyone.

Fake Labubus, aka Lafufus

The most recent viral sensation in the fashion world is the monstrous Labubu doll that is being used as a bag charm. As the original Labubu dolls are priced around Rs 5,000-6,000 in India, apps are selling fake Labubu dolls that have an uncanny resemblance to the original doll. Although they do look like a voodoo doll, girls are going gaga over them too and are purchasing them for just Rs 600.
