This is one of the most loved breakfast delights from Banaras, the spicy masala dal filled kachoris are deep fried and served with a tangy and spicy chickpea curry, chutneys and Jaleba. This one delight can be found in every nook and corner of the city, to try the best ones visit the ones around Kashi Vishwanath Gali and the Old City area.

Banarasi Paan


From Bollywood songs to royals, Banarasi Paan has gained fans around the world. This iconic mouth freshener made from betel leaves filled with areca nut, slaked lime, and sweet or flavored fillings is best found near the ghats and markets like Godowlia and Chowk. The leaves are hand-picked fresh, cleaned, and carefully layered with the fillings, folded into a triangular shape, making it a distinct local experience.

This sweet has garnered fans around the world, this seasonal winter delight available mainly near the Assi Ghat. Made from milk froth sweetened with sugar, saffron, and cardamom, this airy, light dessert is whipped for hours until frothy and served chilled, offering a unique light sweetness.

Jaleba is a close cousin of Jalebi, which is large in size and is even more crispy and delicious. Much like jalebi, Jaleba is deep-fried and dunked in sugar syrup. Found in almost all sweet shops in the Old City, they are made by deep frying fermented batter in circular shapes.

Tamatar Chaat


Another popular treat from the busy lanes of Banaras ghats is Tamatar ki Chaat, which is basically a tangy and spicy tomato-based street snack found in Chowk and Dashashwamedh areas. Sliced ripe tomatoes are topped with tamarind chutney, green chutney, chaat masala, and fresh coriander, garnished with crunchy sev, creating a burst of flavours.

Thick, creamy yogurt drink sweetened with sugar or salt and sometimes flavored with rose or cardamom. The best lassi can be found around the Godowlia area. Traditionally, curd is churned vigorously in a wooden or earthen churner to achieve smoothness and served in a kulhar for an authentic experience.
