Must-try foods at railway stations

Indian railway stations are no less than a fair. With colors of life and emotions of people, it is a catalyst of meeting and separation of humans. Along with this, it is also the cultural identity of the city, showcasing the culinary and artistic side of the state and communities living in the region. And when we talk about the culinary side of a city, it is imperative to talk about the dishes one should try at the stations. Here we have curated a list of twelve railway stations and the foods they are famous for.

Rava Dosa, Chennai


Rava Dosa is a popular South Indian crispy crepe made from semolina (rava), rice flour, and all-purpose flour. Unlike the regular dosa, it’s thin, lacy, and super crunchy—with a slightly nutty flavour and is best served with sambar and coconut chutney.

Ghewar, Udaipur


It is a deep-fried sweet snack known for its crisp, honeycomb-like texture made with maida, ghee, sugar, water, food color, cardamom, saffron, rabri and silver varq.

Moong Dal Pakoda, Bareilly

Also known as Moong Dal Bhajiya, it is a popular deep-fried snack made with moong dal, and is flavoured with salt, turmeric, and spices. It is best served with green chutney or tamarind sauce. To make it, you need to soak moong dal overnight, blend it into puree and let it ferment, before adding spices to it.

Kozhikode Halwa, Kozhikode


It is a sweet from Kozhikode (Calicut), Kerala, known for its chewy texture, glossy appearance, and rich, fruity flavors. It’s made with flour, sugar, ghee, and sometimes coconut oil, and is available in a rainbow of colors and flavours.

Litti Chokha, Patna


It is a rustic, flavorful dish from Bihar and is made with a combination of baked wheat balls (litti) stuffed with spiced sattu, served with chokha, a smoky mashed mix of vegetables like eggplant, potato, and tomato. And during summer months, don't forget to try Sattu Sharbat, which is made with sattu, chilled water, and is seasoned with mint, salt, black pepper, onion, green chilli, and lemon juice. Here, one can also enjoy dishes like khaja, anarsa, and gaja, all these are sweets easily available at railway station.

Fish Curry, Tatanagar


This main course dish is made with a tomato and onion curry along with fish piece in it and spices, which is best enjoyed with steamed rice.

Pyaz Kachori, Jaipur


This is a deep fried delight made with stiff maida dough, stuffed with a spicy onion filling, and the fried until golden and crisp. It is best served hot with mint chutney and chai.

Kanda Poha, Ratlam


Kanda Poha is a popular snack dish, which is made with flattened rice (poha) cooked with onions, mustard seeds, green chilies, and mild spices. It is best enjoyed with sev on top and chai on side.

Sandesh, Howrah


Sandesh is a traditional Bengali sweet dish made with chhena (curdled paneer) , sugar, and cardamom. It comes in steamed variety too and is enjoyed on all special occasions too.

Lassi, Amritsar


It is a traditional curd based beverage, made with fresh curd along with sugar, rose water, malai, and is topped with more malai and rose syrup.

Lal Chah, Guwahati


This beverage of Assam is a herbal-style tea made with tea leaves, water, and sometimes spices, giving it a deep reddish-brown color and a light, earthy flavor.
