The right way to consume roasted chana

Roasted chana is a Ayurveda-approved healthy snack idea that is mostly enjoyed in the form of an evening snack. As per Ayurveda texts, it is a wholesome, grounding, and tridosha-balancing food when consumed in moderation. It is a legume derived from chickpeas (Cicer arietinum), known for its ability to provide strength (bala) and nourishment (brimhana) without being too heavy (guru). According to a study titled Nutritional composition, health benefits and bio-active compounds of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), it is a good source of protein and carbohydrate, fiber, and an important source of essential minerals and vitamins. The quality of protein is better among other pulses. Consumption of chickpeas is related to beneficial health outcomes. It also highlights that the presence of bioactive peptides and antioxidants may offer additional health benefits including anti-inflammatory effects and potential roles in cancer prevention, although more human research is needed. Here, we have curated a list of four foods that can be combined with roasted chana for healthy snacking.

2/5

Fresh veggies

Vegetables like onion, tomato, cucumber, carrot, and capsicum add a refreshing crunch, fiber, and hydration to roasted chana. They are rich in vitamins like A, C, and K, which along with roasted chana make for a lighter snack on digestion. It is said that the fiber slows down glucose absorption, keeping the blood sugar stable and hunger in check. As per a study titled Chemical composition, functional properties and processing of carrot—a review, it is found that veggies like carrot are one of the important root vegetables rich in bioactive compounds like carotenoids and dietary fibers with appreciable levels of several other functional components having significant health-promoting properties.
How to add: All you need to do is, dice the veggies of your choice, toss them with roasted chana, add salt, black pepper, green chilli, and some lime juice. Top it with some more cumin powder and chaat masala and your light evening snack is ready.

3/5

Puffed Rice

If you are looking for something light and crunchy, you can add puffed rice (murmura) with roasted chana to add volume and crunch without extra calories, making it ideal for those watching their weight. It is low in calories and is an easy to digest snack item.It is also a rich source of minerals such as iron and magnesium and has low sodium content that can help regulate blood pressure and aid heart health.
How to add: All you need to do is mix equal parts of roasted chana and puffed rice and then add chopped coriander, finely diced onion, and green chili for a spicy touch. Adding a few drops of mustard oil and lemon juice gives the snack dish the right kick.

4/5

Curd

Roasted chana and curd makes a unique pairing for nutrient-rich dip that can be paired with crackers or pakodas for added benefits. The protein in chana complements the calcium and probiotics in curd, creating a balanced dish that supports muscle recovery, gut health, and bone strength. Curd is also rich in calcium and vitamin D that are good for bone health.
How to add: Simply mix ½ cup of soaked roasted chana with ½ cup of fresh curd along with finely chopped cucumber, coriander, and a pinch of roasted cumin powder. Blend it into a puree and add a tadka of mustard seeds, curry leaves, and green chilli. Enjoy with snacks of your choice.

5/5

Nuts and Seeds

This combo is for those who are looking for a long-lasting energy snack. All you need to do is mix nuts (like peanuts, almonds, or cashews) and seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, or flax). All these nuts and seeds provide a perfect balance of protein, healthy fats, and fiber.
How to add: Take a handful of roasted chana, add mixed nuts, and seeds, and lightly toss them in ghee or olive oil with a pinch of salt and turmeric. Store this homemade trail mix in an airtight jar and enjoy within a week's time.
