Foods that suppress immune function

In times like these when COVID-19 cases are on a boom, it is of utmost importance that we pay attention to our immunity. A robust immune system not only prevents the body from falling ill but also helps the body fight against viruses, if it falls sick. While you might be making efforts to increase the immunity, there are certain foods which can unknowingly suppress your immune function. Here are some foods which you must avoid to keep your immunity on an all-time high. (image credits- istock)

2/6

Sodas

A chilled soda might be your favourite pick on a hot summer day, but the drink that quenches your thirst can impact your immune system in a negative manner. Sodas and fizzy drinks are packed with sugar which are basically empty calories, meaning that they offer no nutritional benefits to the body. Regular consumption of sodas can not only increase the risk of obesity but also suppress the immune function.

3/6

Fried Foods

If you are a fried food lover, it is high time you reduced your oily food intake. Deep-fried foods are loaded with grease, fat and are known to bring down immunity. Opt for roasted, sauteed, baked or air-fried foods to satiate your cravings instead of deep-fried ones.

4/6

Alcohol

Ocassional drinking might not harm the body that much but if you are a habitual drinker and opt for drinks daily or even every week, then you need to know that your favourite glass of booze is dampening your immunity. Regular alcohol consumption can not only impact immunity but also disturb sleep, lead to obesity, damage the liver function and even affect the heart.

5/6

Bakery goods

Bakery goods are mostly prepared using refined flour which is high in gluten, fat content and calories. Mostly cakes, cookies, pastries and other such goodies are prepared using white flour, sugar and oil. All three of them are known to damage immunity.

If you want to consume bakery goods, opt for wheat flour or other healthier flour-based products.

6/6

Sugary products

If you are a sweet lover, then you are in for some trouble. White sugar or Refined sugar is termed the worst food for your immune system.

Foods like candies, chocolates, cakes, donuts, biscuits and other such desserts are loaded with white sugar. Even foods like tomato ketchup, fruit juices, cereals, bread and pasta have hidden sugar in them.

To begin with, you can try to eliminate white sugar from your diet and replace it with healthier substitutes like jagger, honey, coconut sugar, maple syrup etc. All these products have almost equal calories as compared to white sugar but are so much healthier than it.
