The right way to consume foods for eye health


Eyes are one of the most sensitive organs of the human body and call for extra care. Thanks to excessive screen time and mobile use, today, every other person has some sort of eye issue, and it is an alarming sign to pay attention to the well-being of eyes. And one of the easiest ways to take care of eyes is to invest in nutrient-rich foods. Dimple Jangda, a wellness and nutrition expert, recently talked about 6 vegetarian foods that can help boost eye health naturally and the right way of consuming them. In her post, she has mentioned that by simply consuming these foods every day you can protect your eye health against degenerative disorders. Take a look.

Amla

According to Dimple, amla, the Indian gooseberry, is a rich source of vitamin C and antioxidant benefits. Regular consumption helps in protecting your retina and strengthening your eye muscles and also preventing degenerative eye diseases.
How to consume: Blend 2-3 amla into juice along with some water and drink it on an empty stomach. One may add a pinch of black pepper to it.

Triphala

According to her post, it’s a combination of three fruits. It has Haritaki, Bibitaki and Amalaki which helps in pulling toxins out of the eyes and also helps in regeneration of tissues in the eye.
How to consume: According to Dimple, just boil Triphala in water, strain it really well at least three times and splash it in your eyes to pull toxins out of your eye.

Ghee

It helps in lubricating, nourishing and rejuvenating your eye muscles and at the same time it helps in preventing dryness and inflammation which is Vata and Pitta imbalance that affects the eyes, states Dimple in her post.​
How to consume:
It is suggested to consume a teaspoon of ghee in warm water on an empty stomach for better results. One can also make tadka with it along with cumin and chillies and add to dal and curries.

Leafy greens

Leafy greens and cooling foods like spinach, cucumber, pumpkins, grapes are good for eyes. These are rich sources of vitamin A and C that help in reducing Pitta imbalance which is excessive fire that causes redness and also dryness in the eyes, informs Dimple.
How to consume: Simply blanch spinach and then blend into puree and use in soups or curries. And pumpkin can be cooked to make a dry sabzi, and fruits are best consumed raw.

Shatavari

Shatavari is a rich source of vitamin B and E and other micronutrients which helps in regeneration of tissues around the eye and also protects the retina from any kind of retinal damage, states Dimple.


How to consume: Mix 1–2 teaspoons with warm milk, water, or ghee.

Carrot juice

In her concluding note, she states that you can also throw in a glass of carrot juice in your diet which helps in improving your eye health.
How to consume: Simply peel and blend 3-4 carrots and consume the juice without straining. You may add a pinch of salt and pepper to improve the taste of juice.
