Why to store these foods in the fridge door?

Organising your refrigerator is a blend of art and science. It is an art, because you get to accomodate a lot of things in a limited space and it is a science beccause you have to place foods according to their usage, chemical composition, and shelf life in view. While we often talk about the main chamber and chiller of the fridge and the foods that are best suited there, we often ignore the door, which generally stores water bottles. Because it is opened frequently, the door experiences the most temperature fluctuation and is slightly warmer than the rest of the refrigerator and hence the choices of foods to be kept here needs to be wiser. Let us tell you about six types of foods that are best to be stored in the door and why.

2/8

Condiments

First thing that is ideal to be kept in the refrigerator door is condiments such as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, and salad dressings. They are perfect for the fridge door because they contain preservatives like vinegar, salt, and sugar, which help extend their shelf life. Also, they are less sensitive to slight temperature changes, hence storing them in the door keeps them easily accessible without risking spoilage. And as they are frequently used items, so keeping them in the door makes it convenient to use them as well.

3/8

Juices

Second best thing to be kept in the fridge door is pasteurized. According to experts, they undergo processing that kills harmful bacteria, allowing them to remain stable for longer periods. And when you place them in the door, they are safe and even with slight temperature change it doesn't impact their chemical composition and they do not require the coldest part of the fridge. Keeping them in the door makes it easy to grab a quick drink without affecting their quality as well.

4/8

Soft drinks

This includes soft drinks and flavored beverages and are best suited for doors. Like juices, many of these drinks are designed to be shelf-stable before opening and even after opening, they are not highly perishable and can tolerate minor temperature fluctuations. Also, the door structure keeps them positoned right and even after opening there are less chances of leakage and also ensures they are within easy reach for regular consumption.

5/8

Pickles and chutneys

Yes, packaged pickles and chutneys are an excellent choice for the fridge door. They are preserved in brine, which is typically a mixture of salt and vinegar and this acidic environment prevents the growth of harmful bacteria, making pickles highly resistant to spoilage. According to experts, keeping them in the door makes it easy to access and also they can handle the temperature fluctuation without any issue.

6/8

Jam and jellies

From breakfast toast to dinner dessert pudding, jam and jellies are always used regularly and hence placing them in the door is an ideal choice. These spreads are high in sugar, which acts as a natural preservative by reducing moisture available for microbial growth. And according to experts, once the jar is opened they need to refrigerated, but they do not need to be stored in the coldest section. Hence, keeping their usage in view, doors make for an ideal place.

7/8

Butter

Yes, even butter can be stored in the fridge door, only if it will be used within a short period. Butter is more stable than many dairy products due to its fat content. Hence, it is ok to keep them in door as it allows it to stay slightly softer, making it easier to spread.

8/8

What not to store in door

It is important to know about the foods you should never store in the fridge door. Foods like eggs, milk and meeat should never be kept in the door as they need consistent temperature to be preserved for longer. Storing these perishable foods in the door can lead to frequent spoilage and increase the risk of foodborne illness as well. According to experts, keeping the above-mentioned foods in door not just makes them easy to use but also improves the longevity of your food. Proper storage not only reduces waste but also ensures that your food remains safe and enjoyable for longer.
