Food grains adulteration with dhatura!

We all know that food grains are very important for the holistic development of the body. They are rich in essential nutrients and minerals that help protect the body and also contribute to overall development. But, do you know that these days these grains are adulterated with harmful materials like Dhatura, which can be dangerous for the human body. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has started an initiative on Twitter and is called #DetectingFoodAdulterants that aims at guiding common people on how to detect food adulterants at home. Under this, every week they share a quick test that you can try to check whether your food is adulterated or not. This week, they have shared a test video on how to detect dhatura adulteration in food grains.(Image: istock)

​What is Dhatura and its side effects?

As per experts, Dhatura or Datura is a genus of nine species of poisonous, vespertine-flowering plants belonging to the nightshade family Solanaceae. It is commonly used for religious ritual and every part of this plant is toxic, which if consumed may lead to numerous unintentional poisoning deaths. Side effects of consuming dhatura are dry mouth, enlarged pupils, blurred vision, trouble breathing, hallucinations, panic, and even death. (Image: istock)

​How to detect dhatura adulteration in food grains?

1. Take a small quantity of food grains in a glass plate.

2. Closely examine for blackish-brown seeds with flat edges called dhatura.

3. The unadulterated food grains will not have any dhatura seeds.
