Geographical Indication (GI) for betel leaf

Betel leaf, or paan patta, or Kumbakonam vetrilai, was recently granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Government of India, recognizing its regional uniqueness and cultural significance. These are tender, dark- to light-green, oblong, heart-shaped leaves with a pungent taste and are grown in Thanjavur’s fertile Cauvery River basin, giving them a unique taste and aroma. What does Ayurveda say?

As per Ayurveda, it is a tridoshic herb, meaning it helps balance Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Chewing betel leaf after meals is recommended to stimulate Agni (digestive fire), enhance metabolism, and promote the elimination of toxins. Its carminative and antiseptic properties aid in digestion, freshen the breath, and even support oral health by reducing harmful microbes. As per a study by the National Library of Medicine, in India, Betel leaf (BL) has played an important role since ancient culture. Its use in India dates back to 400 BC. As per ancient books of Ayurveda, Charaka, Sushruta Samhitas, and Kashyapa Bhojanakalpa, the practice of chewing BL after meals became common between 75 AD and 300 AD.

Aids digestion


When you chew betel leaves, they stimulate the release of saliva that further helps in breaking down food enzymes, making them easy to digest. This reduces the pressure of the digestive tract and boosts the digestive system.

Reduces Bloating and Gas

Chewing betel leaves can relieve bloating and indigestion by relaxing stomach muscles and reducing gas buildup. They are rich in compounds like eugenol and carvacrol, that help relax the abdominal muscles, reduce gas formation, and support smoother digestion. Chewing a fresh betel leaf after meals stimulates the production of digestive enzymes, which can speed up the breakdown of food and prevent gas buildup in the stomach.

As per traditional medicine, betel leaves are known for their powerful antibacterial and antifungal properties, making them a natural ally for maintaining oral hygiene. Chewing betel leaves can help reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth, preventing issues like bad breath, gum infections, and tooth decay. They also help maintain a healthy pH balance in the oral cavity, keeping the mouth fresh and clean.
