What makes these kitchen items dangerous

Kitchen is said to be the soul of nutrition and healthy well-being. After all, it is the place where all the micro and macro nutrients reside and make our meals a balanced diet. But, did you know the kitchen is also a breeding ground for harmful chemicals, germs, and bacteria that pose serious health risks? From chipped cooking pans to shiny aluminum foil, many regular kitchen items pose a threat to human health and if not taken care of, can lead to serious health issues. Take a look at six common kitchen items that you need to throw out immediately and why.

2/7

Non-stick pans

According to cardiologist Dr. Alok Chopra, overheating cookware can release toxic fumes, and scratches may leach harmful chemicals. Older pans with PFOA and PFAS chemicals can accumulate in the body, posing health risks. These chemicals are linked to hormone disruption, immune system effects, and long-term toxicity.

Healthy alternatives: Choose stainless steel, cast iron, glass, or ceramic cookware and avoid overheating or damaged pans.

3/7

Aluminium foil

He mentioned that when used with acidic foods or at high temperatures, aluminum foil can leach metal into your meals. Long-term exposure has been associated with neurological issues and an increased risk of Alzheimer’s. It’s also non-biodegradable, making it harmful to both your health and the planet.

Healthy alternative
Use parchment paper for baking, and glass or silicone containers for reheating and storage

4/7

Plastic food containers

According to him, many plastics, especially older or low-grade ones, can leach harmful chemicals like BPA, BPS, and phthalates, particularly when microwaved or used with oily, acidic, or hot foods. These disrupt hormones, affect fertility, and weaken immune response. Black plastic is often made from recycled electronic waste and may be toxic.

Healthy alternative: Store food in glass, ceramic, or stainless-steel containers. Avoid microwaving any plastic, even if it’s microwave safe.

5/7

Plastic cooking utensils

According to Dr Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford universities, one should throw away plastic cooking utensils immediately. As per his post on Instagram, over time these can degrade, especially when exposed to high heat releasing harmful chemicals like BPA. It is also stated that BPA (Bisphenol A) and plastic cooking utensils highlight potential health risks primarily due to chemical leaching when plastics are heated. It is said that when exposed to heat or acidic foods, BPA can enter into food and beverages, leading to issues like infertility, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and an increased risk of certain cancers.

Healthy alternative: He suggests opting for utensils made from safer materials such as stainless steel, silicone, or bamboo.

6/7

Plastic cutting boards

He also suggests discarding plastic chopping boards. He explains that these can also degrade over time, releasing microplastics into your food. Experts mention that microplastics from cutting boards can leach into food and raise concerns about inflammation, toxicity, and hormone disruption over time.
Healthy alternative: He recommends shifting to safer options like wooden or glass cutting boards.

7/7

Scratched or chipped non-stick pans

Dr Sethi states that these pans often contain PFA's, which have been linked to health issues such as high blood pressure, cholesterol problems, and reproductive issues. Also, damaged non-stick pans can release these toxic particles into your food.
Healthy alternative: He suggests replacing them with safer alternatives like stainless steel, cast iron or fully ceramic pans.
