The goodness of coconut

Coconut milk and coconut water share the same source but that does not mean they are the same. Fruit of the coconut palm tree, scientifically known as Cocos nucifera, coconut is filled with the goodness of nutrients that are beneficial for us. The coconut flesh is high in fat and can be eaten raw or dried. The coconut water is used to make beverages. Coconut provides us with rich coconut oil, milk and water. To know when to use the products, it is important to know that coconut milk is different from coconut water. To find out, let's explore the two individuals.

2/5

Health benefits of coconut

Coconuts are mostly rich in fats. They also have generous amounts of protein, fibre and essential minerals such as iron, selenium. sodium, calcium and phosphorous. It is especially rich in manganese which is vital for bone health and the metabolism of carbs, proteins and cholesterol is what makes it important for our diet. Consuming coconut oil can help reduce belly fat. It also has antidiabetic effects due to its arginine content. Coconut has powerful antioxidants that protect cells from oxidative damage.
3/5

Coconut water

Coconut water is found in young, green coconuts. Slightly sweet to taste, rich in nutrients, coconut water is low in calories than coconut milk. It is also rich in easily digested carbohydrates. Coconut water has been the talk of the town for its perceived health benefits. It has antioxidant properties and helps prevent kidney stones. It also keeps us hydrated in summers. Coconut water is an efficient treatment for acute diarrhoea. It is said to have similar electrolyte content as found in isotonic drinks. Coconut water is a refreshing beverage that provides rehydration after an intense workout replenishes lost electrolytes.
4/5

Coconut milk

Coconut milk, unlike coconut water, is not harvested directly from the fruit. Creamed coconut and coconut milk are made with coconut flesh by grating it and soaking in hot water. The cream rises on the top and is skimmed off. The remaining liquid is squeezed through a cheesecloth to extract a white liquid that is coconut milk. This milk is used in cooking curries and soups. Coconut milk is lactose-free which makes it a great milk substitute for those with lactose intolerance. Coconut flesh is highly nutritious and processed coconut milk could lack in all the nutrition. Coconut milk has more calories than coconut water.
5/5

Conclusion

Both coconut milk and coconut water are not to be confused with each other. While coconut water is low in calories, coconut milk is high in fats and calorie count but both are delicious in their own way. In terms of nutrition, both have essential nutrients that are good for us. Coconut water is low in calories so it can be used in smoothies and juices by people who desire to lose weight. Whereas, coconut milk can be a plant-based substitute for milk in cereals and coffee. It is the healthier alternative for fats and it tastes delicious. Hence, both of them cannot substitute each other, so if a recipe requires you to use coconut milk then that is what you must use.
