What study says?

According to a study published in Cardiovascular Research, eating full-fat dairy in moderation can help protect your heart. The study conducted by the University of Naples focused on specific categories of food, such as red meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, produce, nuts, and grains and it was found that regular consumption of yogurt and small amounts of cheese could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The study also revealed that a small amount of chocolate is also good for the heart. (Image: istock)

What makes them heart-healthy?

Experts believe that the fermentation process involved in the making of cheese and yogurt makes them heart-healthy. According to the study findings, specific compounds in cocoa called flavanols are linked to keeping the heart-healthy. While the study doesn’t specify which chocolate is best, previous studies suggest dark chocolate may be the best option for heart health, since it's richer in flavanols, antioxidants, and other beneficial nutrients.
