Foods that are spiking your blood sugar levels

When people think of foods that spike blood sugar, desserts usually take the blame. Cakes, candies, and pastries are obvious culprits, but the reality is more complicated. A surprising number of everyday foods, even some we assume are “healthy”, can cause sharp rises in glucose. For anyone managing diabetes, trying to prevent energy crashes, or simply aiming for steady health, knowing these hidden triggers makes a big difference.

Frequent spikes force insulin to work harder, and over time the body becomes less responsive, a condition known as insulin resistance. What matters isn’t just how much sugar is in a food, but also how quickly starches break down into glucose once digested. That’s where some of these sneaky foods come in.

Marketed as a creamy, plant-based alternative to dairy, oat milk sounds wholesome. But oats are a starchy grain, and when processed into milk, they turn into simple sugars rapidly. Compared to nut- or dairy-based options, oat milk can lead to sharper glucose spikes.

Naked carbs

Eating carbs by themselves—like plain bread, white rice, or a handful of pretzels—gives the body a quick jolt of sugar with nothing to slow absorption. Without protein, fiber, or fat to balance them, these “naked” carbs cause a fast spike followed by an equally quick crash.

Fresh juice often looks virtuous, but removing fruit’s fiber during juicing leaves behind concentrated sugar.
