Lesser-known nuts of India that must be popularised

India is a treasure trove of culinary delights, with a rich tradition of using various nuts in both cooking and medicine. While almonds, cashews, and walnuts are well-known and widely used, several other lesser-known nuts are just as nutritious and beneficial. Among these are chilgoza (pine nuts), chiraunji, and a few others that have been part of Indian kitchens and Ayurvedic practices for centuries. These nuts not only add unique flavours to dishes but also offer a host of health benefits. Read more about these lesser-known nuts of India and their benefits.

Chilgoza (pine nuts)

Chilgoza, also known as pine nuts, is a small, elongated nut that grows in the high-altitude regions of the Himalayas. These nuts are packed with nutrients and have a rich, buttery flavour. Chilgoza is rich in healthy fats, particularly monounsaturated fats, which are beneficial for heart health. It is also a good source of protein, making it a great addition to vegetarian diets. Chilgoza (pine nuts) supports heart health by reducing bad cholesterol due to its monounsaturated fats. It aids in weight management through pinolenic acid, which suppresses appetite and boosts immunity with its rich antioxidant content, particularly vitamin E.

Chiraunji

Chiraunji, also known as charoli nuts, are tiny, almond-like seeds that are commonly used in Indian desserts and sweet dishes. These nuts are highly valued for their medicinal properties in Ayurveda and are known to improve digestion, skin health, and overall vitality. These nuts promote skin health with antioxidants and essential fatty acids, aid in treating digestive issues like diarrhoea and dysentery, and provide a quick energy boost due to their protein and healthy fat content.

Shahbaloot (chestnut)

Popularly known as Shahbaloot in India, these nuts are mainly grown in Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir. These nuts are rich in fibre, vitamin C, and antioxidants, making them excellent for heart health, digestion, and boosting immunity. Unlike other nuts, chestnuts are low in fat and provide a good source of complex carbohydrates, aiding in sustained energy.

5/7

Pahadi Badam (hazelnuts)

Pahadi Badam are primarily found in the Himalayan regions of India, particularly in Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir. These nuts are rich in healthy fats, particularly monounsaturated fats, which are beneficial for heart health. They also contain high levels of vitamin E, an antioxidant that supports skin health and protects against free radical damage. Hazelnuts are a good source of dietary fibre, aiding in digestion, and are packed with essential nutrients like magnesium, calcium, and B vitamins, contributing to overall wellness. Their nutrient-dense profile makes them a valuable addition to a balanced diet.

6/7

Betel nuts

These nuts are often overlooked in the broader spectrum of nuts in India, yet they hold significant health benefits. Despite their widespread use in cultural practices, betel nuts remain lesser known compared to other popular nuts like almonds and cashews. Traditionally chewed in many Asian cultures, betel nuts are known for their stimulating effects, similar to caffeine, which can help enhance alertness and concentration. They also aid in digestion by stimulating the release of digestive enzymes, making them beneficial after meals. Additionally, betel nuts have antimicrobial properties that can help in maintaining oral hygiene.

7/7

Khubani

Known to the world as a dried apricot, Khubani is primarily found in the cold regions of Ladakh and Kashmir. Rich in dietary fibre, vitamins A and C, and antioxidants, Khubani supports digestive health, boosts immunity, and promotes healthy skin. Despite its numerous health benefits, including improving heart health and aiding in weight management, Khubani remains underappreciated compared to more popular nuts. Its unique flavour and nutritional profile make it a hidden gem in Indian cuisine.

Almonds and cashews are not nuts. They're drupes.
