The books of royal history hold some bitter and sweet secrets that often intrigue us to dive back to the era and live the nostalgia in our dreams. Isn’t it fascinating to read the royal tales that beautifully encapsulate the essence of the era?

With the sad demise of Queen Elizabeth II world saw the end of the Elizabethan era. The 2 longest reigning royal, Her Majesty’s love for tea and simple drinks was known to the world. With that we wonder what other world rulers drank daily to keep that majestic spirit alive! Here are some excerpts from the books of history that will fuel your love for the regal era.

​Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary)


Her Majesty’s love for light teas was known to the world. Her morning indulgence was incomplete without the smooth and light Earl Grey tea, which she enjoyed with cookies. She loved the aromatic experience of Silver Tips Imperial Tea from Assam.

Chef Darren McGrady, the Queen's personal cook for 15 years, in his book on the British Royal kitchen mentioned her love for tea and how she enjoyed tea without milk or sugar and paired it with sandwiches and light tea cakes.

She also loved Gin based cocktails and even launched a gin brand.

​Alexander The Great (355 BC-322 BC)


One the mightiest conquerors and the ruler of the largest empire of the world --Alexander also known as Alexander The Great was one of those rulers whose warrior spirit was fueled by wine.

It was believed that he drank huge amounts of wine. In fact, a mystery theory around his death at the age of 33 revolves around his extreme drinking habits. His love for Macedoinan wines was known to the world. As per one of the age-old tales, his drinking habits were such that once under the influence of wine Alexander ended up burning down the Persian city of Persepolis.

​Napoleon Bonaparte


The man whose courage changed the fate of the French Revolution and conquered much of Europe in the early 19th century, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) also known as Napoleon I, was a French military leader and Emperor who rose to fame during the French Revolution. As per history, it was believed that Burgundy from Chambertin was his favourite wine so much so that he would never travel without a Chambertin. He loved Chambertin not only for its enticing taste but also because his physician encouraged him to drink it for good health. As per the books, this is how Napoleon appreciated his love for wine: "Nothing makes the future look so rosy as to contemplate it through a glass of Chambertin."

​King Tutankhamun


King Tutankhamun also known as King Tut was the last ruler and an Egyptian pharaoh of the New Kingdom of Egyptian history and his demise marked the end of the dynasty. According to researchers it was believed that King Tut loved both white wine and red wine so he was entombed with jars of wine. In ancient Egypt wine was believed to be a status symbol. In fact, it is said that he had employed a personal wine maker.

​King Louis XIV


France’s King Louis XIV was in love with French Champagne so much that all his royal meals were paired with this drink. His Champagne was sourced from the Northern part of France from a region called Champagne, which was known for the creation of finest Champagnes and Prosecco. His love for Champagne was such that doctors advised him to consume other drinks and avoid Champagne.

Queen Victoria (1819-190​1)


During the reign of Queen Victoria, Scotch whiskey and concoctions made with whiskey became a quintessential royal drink. During the summers, Queen Victoria loved indulging in whiskey and cocktail blends at the royal Balmoral Castle in the Highlands of Scotland. According to the books of history, she loved making blends by mixing whiskey with claret, tea, and soda water.
