Every year we witness a lot of food trends and this year, one trend that we saw making headlines globally was the use of edible gold. From small restaurants to hotel chains, the use of edible gold saw a sudden surge to grab the eyeballs of patrons. Moreover, these gold-plated dishes made a huge hit on social media too. Here are a few gold-plated dishes that made news in 2021.

Non-edible Gold Avocado Toast Sculpture

Tim Bengel, a German artist has made an 18-karat gold sculpture of avocado toast. The video of this unique piece of art was shared by the artist on Instagram. The sculpture has 27 individual parts including two bagel halves, five tomato slices, five onion rings, five avocado strips, and ten arugula leaves. As per the video, the artwork is called Who Wants To Live Forever? And the art piece also became a part of the Berlin Art Week exhibition in Germany.

999.9 Fine Gold Brick

Gurugram and Lucknow-based Distillery restaurant and bar is selling 999.9 Fine Gold Brick, which is actually a Mango Cheesecake coated with 24-carat edible gold and has a white chocolate brownie base. The interesting dessert is made using Philadelphia cream cheese, edible gold, mango puree, sugar, and heavy cream. It takes around 30-45 minutes to prepare the dish, including preparation and refrigeration time.

​Ferrero Rocher Paan with Edible Gold Varq

Delhi's Yamu's Panchayat, India's first paan parlour, located in Connaught Place is selling Ferrero Rocher Paan with edible gold varq. As per the viral video of pan, it is a chlorophyll-rich paan which is also a good source of energy. Apart from betel leaf, it has choona, a rich source of calcium and kaatha, which is good for the human throat. It also has khajur, coconut powder, Ferrero Rocher, kesar syrup and edible gold varq and gold-coated cardamom.

​French Fries (chips)

Revamped by a restaurant in the United States, it is the world's most expensive French fries that cost almost Rs. 15k for a single portion. As per the Guinness World Records website, Manhattan-based fast food restaurant Serendipty3 made it to the Guinness World Records in 2021 by cooking up the 'ultimate' cheesy French fries - Creme de la Creme Pomme Frites. As per social media reports, these fries are made with upstate Chipperbeck potatoes, Dom Perignon Champagne and J. LeBlanc French Champagne Ardenne Vinegar, Guerande truffle salt, Urbani summer truffle oil and topped with shaved Crete Senesi Pecorino Tartufello, and 23k edible gold dust.

22-karat Gold Vada Pav

This is “world's first" 22-k gold vada pav, by O'Pao in Dubai. The restaurant announced the launch on its official Instagram handle in 2021 along with a glimpse of what goes into making this exotic gold vada pav. According to an Instagram reel posted by the restaurant, the exotic vada pav comes in an embellished wooden box. The vada is coated with besan batter, and is filled with truffle butter and cheese and then a final layer of 22 karat edible gold is added on top. This vada pav is paired with sweet potato fries and mint lemonade. This vada pav costs 99 AED (United Aram Emirates Dirham), which is approx Rs. 2000 (1,966.43 INR) in Indian currency.

​Edible Saree

Anna Elizabeth George, a Kollam-based PhD student and a home baker, made the world's first 100 percent edible saree which resembles the traditional Kasavu. She used starch-based wafer paper for the saree base. And the wafer paper is made of potato and rice starch. She used 100 wafer papers each measuring an A4 sheet to get the accurate length and texture of the saree. And she also used gold dust lustre to get the golden zari border look.
