What is Gond Katira?

Gond commonly known as Gum is a crystalline herb, which is also known as Tragacanth gum. This is a natural gum extracted from the saps of locoweed plants. It is naturally available in the form of twisted crystals and when soaked with water it swells up and forms a thick mixture which is known as Gond Katira. This was traditionally used as an Ayurvedic remedy to reduce body heat during summers, control nose bleeding, treat several ailments like cough, upset stomach and dysentery. One of the most amazing health benefit of this gond is that it helps cure both diarrhoea as well as constipation. It is also said to help in weight loss. Interestingly, unlike its health benefits Gond katira has no goodness in taste or flavor and when mixed with water it swells up like a jelly. This versatile food has no taste, no flavour and can be made in several unique ways to manage weight and boost immunity during the summers. Moreover, mixing gond with drinks and desserts provides satiety, boosts metabolism and helps in effective weight management.

​Gond katira bowl


To make this quick breakfast bowl, take a large bowl and add 1-2 teaspoons of gond in 1 ½ cup of low fat milk/almond milk, mix it with vanilla essence. Refrigerate, next morning when the bowl is set with the jelly like gond milk, add fruits, nuts, honey and mix well. Enjoy.

Gond Katira drink


Take one glass of water, 1 teaspoon of gond crystals, add crushed mint leaves and two lemon slices. Store it overnight. Once the gond swells up add in lemon juice, honey, black salt and cold water along with sabja seeds. This will help lose weight faster.
