India Food Services Report 2019

Are you a vegetarian, who is often trolled for eating out with ‘Tum kya wahi ghaas-phuss khaoge’? If yes, then you have all the reasons to flaunt your love for vegetarian food now onwards. According to the latest India Food Services Report 2019, north Indian vegetarian food is the most ordered and loved choice of Indians. Here’s all you need to know about the study and its findings.

2/7

The survey

Conducted by the National Restaurants Association of India, the survey studied the habits of Indians who are frequent to restaurants. The parameters studied were-from where they order, what they order, how much they spend and which type of places they like to hang out in. The study also paid attention to the business aspect like the amount of investment and revenue generation in the Indian F&B sector.
3/7

What do people order the most?

The study divulged that almost half of the restaurant orders placed in India are for north Indian cuisine which includes roti, dal, paneer and tandoori chicken. When Mughlai food share was added to it, the share went up to a whopping 63 per cent.
4/7

Is South Indian food not in the list?

While the past studies reflect that people in India love South Indian food, during this study, south India didn’t even make it to the second spot. At 27 per cent of orders, Chinese food stood as the second most preferred, while South Indian is at 3rd spot with 23 per cent of the orders.
5/7

Vegetarian: The most ordered food

The most surprising thing about the study was, vegetarian food is the most popular variation in the north and west of the country, while non-vegetarian is most popular in South India at 70 per cent of the orders. The eastern India orders non-veg food more and stands with 57 per cent share of the restaurant market.
6/7

What’s the reason behind it?

Experts feel that this change is because of the awareness of eating vegan or vegetarian and avoiding non-veg food. Also, it was found during the study that it is because of complete dominance on the palate of restaurant-goers in northern and central India.
7/7

Chinese is loved too

During the study, it was found that Chinese is loved in both south and west of the country. In fact, South Indian and Chinese are the top favourites in eastern India, closely followed by Indian snacks, as well as wraps and rolls.
