Importance of water and the right way to drink

Water is the basic necessity of life. After all, this clear liquid makes up about 60–70% of our body weight and plays a vital role in maintaining balance, regulating temperature, and supporting digestion. Water helps transport nutrients and oxygen to cells, flushes out toxins, lubricates joints, and keeps skin healthy and radiant. It also aids in proper kidney function, prevents dehydration, and improves energy and focus. While many of us know the importance of water in our daily life, we often neglect consuming the right amount of water and don't know the right way of storing the drinking water either. In a recent blog post of Isha Foundation, Sadhguru explained the right way of storing water and also shared 5 tips on drinking water the right way.

How to store water

According to Sadhguru, traditionally, water has to be in a metal pot, preferably copper, brass or some alloy of copper. In his post he has explained that traditionally, people would wash the copper vessel in the night with a little tamarind and turmeric, smear sacred ash on it, then fill it with water, put a flower on top of it, light a lamp next to it, and go to bed; the next morning they used to drink that water. As per experts, storing water in earthen pots in summer months is also a healthy practice, as it cools the water and further keeps the gut at ease. In his post, further he has explained 5 ways to drink water the right way. Scroll down to read.

Treat water with reverence

He suggests to treat water with reverence. He states, "Just spend one moment of gratitude and reverence before you consume water, because this is the material with which you are making your life."

4/7

Drink with your hands

In his blog post, he has mentioned that the best way to drink water is with your own hands. If that is not possible, if someone gives water to you in a metal tumbler, you always hold it with both your hands and drink it.

5/7

Drink water at the right temperature

As per Sadhguru's post, in the Yogic culture, if you are on the path of inner transformation and want to transform your system to another dimension of possibility, then you only drink water which is within four degrees of your body temperature. According to his post, your normal body temperature is somewhere around thirty-seven degrees centigrade, so you can drink water between thirty-three and forty-one degrees. And for students, he suggests that they should drink within a variation of eight degrees and if you are a householder managing a family, you can drink within a twelve degree variation.

How much water is good?

In his post, he has mentioned that when you feel thirsty, you must drink water. Just to ensure that you are drinking enough, drink ten percent more than what you actually need.It is very necessary that you must drink water when there is an indication of thirst. When the body indicates you need water, you must give it water within twenty minutes or at the most half an hour, he states in the blog post.

Eat water

He also says that apart from drinking water, it is important to eat high water content foods. If you eat a fruit, it is nearly ninety percent water. Vegetables are over seventy percent water. Your food must have a minimum of seventy percent water content, he informs. This not only keeps the body hydrated but also aids digestion, supports nutrient absorption, and maintains cellular function. Eating water-rich foods like cucumbers, melons, oranges, or leafy greens helps regulate temperature, flush out toxins, and sustain natural energy levels throughout the day. Over time, this habit can improve skin health, prevent fatigue, balance electrolytes, and keep organs functioning smoothly, especially in warm or humid climates where hydration needs are higher.
