How to detoxify the liver at home

The liver plays a crucial role in the human body. It acts as the body’s natural detoxifier, filtering out toxins from the blood, breaking down harmful substances, and metabolizing drugs and alcohol. The liver also plays a crucial role in digestion by producing bile, which helps break down fats and absorb nutrients. But sadly, the erratic lifestyle habits have placed the liver health at risk. And the most common problem related to liver is-fatty liver. For the unversed, fatty liver is a condition where extra fat builds up in the liver cells. Normally, the liver contains some fat, but when fat makes up more than 5–10% of the liver's weight, it is considered fatty liver. This happens when the liver cannot break down fats properly, causing fat to accumulate over time. In its early stages, fatty liver usually has no symptoms, hence it is important to take care of your liver from an early age. Dimple Jangda, a wellness and nutrition expert recently shared a reel on Instagram, where she explained how some diet changes and food habits can improve liver health and reduce the chances of fatty liver. Scroll down to read the details.

Eat dinner on time

As per Dimple, it is important to understand that the liver enzymes peak during midnight. This is a proven science, hence, it's important to sleep between 10pm to 2am. That's when the liver actively detoxifies and has high lipid metabolism. Also, ensure to also eat your meal 3 hours before bedtime, so you give your liver complete rest and the ability to focus on detoxification. It is suggested to finish your meal by around 6 or 7pm before sunset and give yourself 3 hours before bedtime.

3/6

Avoid alcohol and excess fat packaged processed foods

She explains in the video that alcohol and fat consumption only leads to lipid overload, toxic overload and causes oxidative stress for the liver. Hence, it is advisable to avoid alcohol and packaged processed foods at all costs. According to a study titled Impact of alcohol use on liver disease outcomes, alcohol accelerates liver fibrosis progression and interacts with other risk factors, including obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and viral hepatitis. A 2024 nationwide cohort study published in the report also demonstrated that use of alcohol significantly increases the risk of liver-related complications, especially in patients already suffering from other liver diseases or metabolic risk factors.

4/6

Add healthy fats in diet

She also suggests adding olive oil, cashew butter, avocados, nuts and seeds like pumpkin seeds, flax seeds in daily diet. Also, fruits have good fats. These will help in removing toxic overload from the liver, detoxifying the kidneys and the liver and aiding the detoxification process.

5/6

Add herbs in diet

In the video, she also mentions to use Ayurvedic herbs in your diet like hibiscus powder, chrysanthemum, dandelion root, rose, peppermint in daily diet. It is said that adding them in diet, also aids in improving liver enzymes and detoxifying the liver. It is said that hibiscus powder is rich in antioxidants and exhibits anti-inflammatory properties that support liver function by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in liver tissue. Human studies also indicate hibiscus can improve lipid profiles and metabolic parameters without harmful effects on liver enzyme levels, suggesting it supports liver health safely.

6/6

Eat rainbow

Last, but not the least is to make sure to eat the rainbow, which means all colourful vegetables like spinach, celery, cilantro, curry leaves, moringa, spirulina, as they all help boost liver health. In the video, she mentioned that root vegetables like carrot and beetroot can help in regenerating liver enzymes and thus helps in reducing toxic overload from your liver.
