The only Indian dish among the Best Rated Pumpkin Dishes

What makes Pumpkin a special vegetable

When it comes to colourful and vibrant veggies, the bright shade of pumpkin idten strikes us. It is a nutritious and versatile vegetable and is said that the fruit of pumpkin including the flesh, seed, and peel are a rich source of primary and secondary metabolites, including proteins, carbohydrates, monounsaturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, carotenoids, tocopherols, tryptophan, delta-7-sterols, and many other phytochemicals. Other benefits of pumpkin includes such as improving spermatogenesis, wound healing, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, anti-ulcerative properties, and more. Its high fibre content aids digestion, promotes gut health, and helps maintain a feeling of fullness, making it beneficial for weight management. Low in calories yet packed with potassium, vitamin C, and antioxidants, pumpkin supports heart health and helps regulate blood pressure. Its anti-inflammatory properties strengthen immunity. Mostly used to make sabzi, curry, or as a softening agent for kebabs, this versatile vegetable is used in many exotic ways across the world. It is one of the richest natural sources of beta-carotene, which gives pumpkin its bright orange colour. In a recent post on its website, Taste Atlas released a list of 56 Best Rated Dishes with Pumpkin. And much to our surprise, there is only one dish that has secured te 45th position. As per the website, for the “56 Best Rated Dishes with Pumpkin” list until January 24, 2026, 940,959 ratings were recorded, of which 610,190 were recognized by the system as legitimate. Pulinkari, Rank 45


It is a traditional stew or vurry originating from Kerala. The dish is made with a combination of red pumpkin (kaddu), cucumbers, and a ball of tamarind soaked in water. The vegetables are cooked until tender, then mixed with a paste consisting of red chili peppers, fenugreek seeds, and grated coconut. The combination is brought to boil and removed from the heat, then mixed with tempered mustard seeds. This sour vegetable curry is stirred well, then served hot. It’s a staple on numerous household menus in the region, states Taste Atlas website.

At the top is an Italian dish made with zucchini or pumpkin flowers, and has a filling of cheese, usually mozzarella or ricotta, meat, and fish.

Also known as Pumpkin Rice, it is dish native to Marshall Islands and consists of diced pumpkins and rice, boiled together in water with the optional addition of coconut milk for extra flavoring. The pumpkin can be smashed or left intact, depending on personal preferences. It is traditionally served in a bowl as a side dish with fish dishes.

It is a pumpkin soup and is made with diced or grated pumpkin flesh that is lightly sautéed with vegetables before it is simmered in water, chicken stock, or meat broth until all the ingredients are tender. It is a Serbian pie dish consisting of phyllo sheets that are filled with grated pumpkin, sugar, and spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg. The pie can be additionally enriched by the addition of raisins.
