Aligarh kachori seller raided by GST officials

Located near Seema Talkies in Aligarh, the small and ordinary kachori stall of Mukesh Kumar became the talk of the food industry, when it came under the lens of the commercial tax department. Mukesh has been running the shop for the last 10-12 years and has earned repute for selling one of the best kachoris in town. But how well his business has been performing came to light only when the government officials found that the man running this small outlet has an annual turnover of more than Rs. 70 lakh and did not have GST (goods and services tax) registration.

GST officials take

During a recent search operation by the officials of special investigating branch (SIB) of the commercial tax department (Aligarh), it was found that Mukesh has property worth Rs 70 lakh, but did not have GST (goods and services tax) registration.

Why did this search operation happen

According to media agencies, the SIB conducted the search following a complaint received from Lucknow Revenue Intelligence department regarding the illegal business practices of the kachori seller. Before the official raid happened, the SIB team did a recce by observing the footfall at the stall and later the official search operation took place. According to officials, the annual turnover of Mukesh might go beyond Rs 1 crore.

Kachori seller’s take

In a statement, Mukesh Kumar has said that his daily sales are only in the range of Rs 2,000 to Rs 3000 and he can never think of having property worth in lakhs.

What he should have done?

According to government rules, the kachori seller is liable to pay 5% GST, which is levied on food items. In a statement to TOI, Deputy Commissioner, commercial tax in GST, RPS Kauntey, said that a notice has been issued to the shopkeeper and he has been asked to register himself under the GST and pay his annual tax.

Verdict

If we go by the media reports, Mukesh is a roadside kachori seller and is not even among the big names of the city. Wonder if the bigger names are tracked, what will be the end result???
