The oldest living male credits this secret drink for his longevity

Recently, Guinness World Records (GWR) updated their list of the oldest male living on earth and it was a man from Venezuala named Juan Vicente Pérez. He is currently 112 years old and will soon celebrate his 113th birthday on May 27, which is soon approaching. As per GWR, Juan Vicente has exceptional health and memory and is even the first male supercentenarian from Venezuela. (Images courtesy: iStock & Guinness World Record)

His secret to a long life

In the official statement, GWR describes his secret for a long life as “work hard, rest on holidays, go to bed early, drinking a glass of aguardiente every day, love God, and always carry him in your heart.”

What is aguardiente?

While this is ecstatic news, we got to wonder what is aguardiente that drinks every other day. After a bit of research, we found out that it is an alcoholic beverage that contains between 29-60 per cent alcohol by volume and is a distilled liquor that’s made with sugarcane and is flavoured with anise. Roughly translating to ‘fiery water’, this drink is made using water, alcohol, sugar and anise and is often referred to as the sugar water or ‘guaro’ in Columbia.(Image courtesy: iStock)

Liquor being the first choice for centenarians

If we look at the past records, it comes to light that most of the oldest people living on earth credit some form of liquor as their secret to health. People have cited red wine, whiskey and even beer as their go-to daily drinks for longevity. But, is liquor really a helpful drink when it comes to a long life? According to Mayo Clinic, moderate drinking can actually have some stellar benefits, including reducing your risk of heart disease.

Conclusion

Various researchers have studied the effect of red wine, whiskey and beer on longevity and most of these studies do refer to moderate drinking as the best medicine for health. However, as we even say this, there are more studies needed on this matter.
