PM Narendra Modi meets mother Heeraben at Gandhinagar home

The third phase of the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 saw an emotional side of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday morning, when he met his mother Heeraben at Gandhinagar home. We all now that Narendra Modi is close to his mother, whom he visits whenever he's in Gujarat, where she lives with his brother Pankaj on the outskirts of Gandhinagar. He reached his mother’s home before casting his vote in neighbouring Ahmedabad’s Ranip. This short visit was about seeking his mother’s blessing for the ongoing festival of democracy. What his mom gave him?

As part of the tradition, Heeraben give the PM a coconut, a chunri and Rs 500 as neg. According to media reports, the chuniri was from Mahakali Mandir of Pavagadh in Gujarat’s Champaner. Later, PM Modi touched her feet and left for voting.

What she made him eat?

The video shared by news agencies showcases that after seeking mother’s blessing, she fed him a sweet dish that looked like a halwa. She also ate out of his hands. It was a picture of love!

According to Indian tradition and customs, eating sweet dish or curd and sugar, before going out of the house or before an important event in life, is considered a good omen.

Expert take

In early times the idea behind eating sweets before going out was to get instant energy and it also helped people to manager hunger for a longer period, as in those days, food was not so easily available everywhere. According to Ayurveda, curd and sugar was consumed because curd neutralised the stomach acids and sugar provided instant energy.

Superstition

It is believed that it all started in the palaces of the rajas, who used to have curd and sugar before leaving for war (yudh). While curd was considered the harbinger of good luck, sugar gave instant energy during long war hours.

This unconditional love of Narendra Modi for his mother shows that his roots are deeply entrenched in his homeland and that’s the reason, every time he takes any big step in life, he visits his mother and seeks her blessings.
