Tirupati temple and jute bags!

Everyone is doing their bit to help protect the environment and in the same league, now Tirupati Lord Venkateshwara temple has joined hands to follow eco-friendly packaging practices and will distribute laddoo prasadam in jute bags, rather than plastic bags. This step is in view of the worsening climatic conditions that is turning soil, water and air toxic.

The jute bag initiative

If reports are to be believed, the temple trust Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) has joined hands with Aditya Birla Group Company and Jute Corporation of India (JCI) to handle the pilot project, where they will distribute laddoo prasadam in 100% recyclable aluminium foil laminated jute bags.

What’s the price?

As per the reports, the foil laminated bags range from Rs 25-50 per bag and are much more expensive than polythene and paper bags.

How is the response?

In a statement, Jute Corporation of India has said that they have sold more than 3 lakh bags in the past two months and have also opened a distribution counter for sale of jute foil lamination bags in the temple premises. (Image: Times Now)

Authorities take

In a statement, JCI Chairman and managing director has said that this initiative will benefit the environment and will also help in generating employment opportunities to thousands of artisans in and around Tirupati, Telangana and Kolkata. The management body is expecting to make revenue of Rs 50 crore per annum from the sales of these bags at the shrine, as the temple sells a minimum of 3.5-4 lakh laddoos every day.

My recent visit has been that lot of plastic n related items are abundantly available..nobody is bothered to make plastic free ..plastic pet bottle free zone.. Temple authorities must take strict action right from entry at main gate..... Instead of costly jute bags ..they can use cheap cotton muslin cloth bags which are cost effective n eco friendly...TTD must make it mandatory for all devotees...
