Wegmans Chicken breast nuggets recalled in 8 states; USDA issues health alert

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for frozen chicken nuggets sold by Wegmans stores. The product has been recalled by the company as it may be contaminated with extraneous material, specifically bone fragments.

In an announcement on Jan. 27, the organization said that nuggets should be either thrown away or returned. Food products are often recalled when there is a risk of contamination, such as the presence of harmful bacteria, undeclared allergens, or foreign materials in the product. This step ensures consumer safety, which is a top priority.

The FSIS said that they have issued a health alert, not a recall as the specific product is no longer available for purchase. The store themselves issued a notification alerting about the 'possible bone pieces' in Wegmans FYFGA Chicken Breast Nuggets 46oz. The frozen, fully cooked breaded chicken breast nugget product was produced on August 26, 2024. The product comes with a used-by date of 08/26/25.

The company said that for a refund, 'All products may be returned'.

The product also has the establishment number “P-33944” inside the USDA mark of inspection. Produced for Wegmans Food Markets, this product was distributed to retail in locations - Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, and DC.

The FSIS was notified after Wegmans received multiple complaints from consumers about the bone fragments in the frozen fully cooked breaded chicken breast nugget. So far, there have been no confirmed reports of injury due to consumption of these products. However, anyone who is concerned about the injury should contact a healthcare provider.


The FSIS said it is concerned that some may have this product in their freezers. The consumers are urged to not consume the product if they have bought it. The organization emphasized that the product should be either thrown away or returned to the store.
